Office Chair Modification Trolley

Admin October 13, 2026

There are multiple ways to modify an office chair into a trolley. The specific plans and steps are as follows:

I. Basic Modification: Simple Trolley with Backrest Retained

This modification is suitable for scenarios requiring lightweight cargo carrying. The core idea is to simplify the structure and enhance mobility.

  1. Structural Modification: Retain the backrest of the office chair as the supporting structure of the trolley and remove all chair legs to lower the center of gravity.
  2. Wheel Installation: Select four universal wheels with self-tapping screws (preferably silent rubber material, with a single load-bearing capacity of โ‰ฅ40kg). Use a tape measure to mark the four corners at the bottom of the chair seat. Align the center hole of the wheels with the marked points, insert the self-tapping screws vertically, and rotate them clockwise to secure them.
  3. Handle Addition: Install a metal or wooden handle at the top of the backrest for easy pushing.
  4. Testing and Adjustment: Check whether the wheels rotate smoothly under no-load conditions. Observe the load-bearing stability after loading, and adjust the fixed angle of the wheels if necessary.

II. Universal Modification: Mobile Trolley with Added Casters

This is an upgrade plan for ordinary office chairs, focusing on adaptability modification and load-bearing optimization.

  1. Material Adaptation: Select a universal wheel set with self-tapping screws. Ensure that the wheel diameter matches the width of the chair legs (usually 50-75mm is appropriate). Rubber material can reduce noise.
  2. Component Disassembly: Turn the chair upside down and use a screwdriver to remove the original plastic pads (if any) to expose the metal or plastic structure of the chair legs.
  3. Precise Installation: Use a tape measure to measure the distance between the four corners at the bottom of the chair legs and mark the center points of the casters. Align the center hole of the wheels with the marked points, insert the self-tapping screws vertically, and rotate them until they are completely fixed (the depth should penetrate the material of the chair legs).
  4. Function Testing: First, push the trolley for 10 meters under no-load conditions to check the flexibility of the wheels. Then, place a 20kg load to test the load-bearing stability. If there is any shaking, the wheels need to be reinforced.

III. Advanced Modification: Car Seat Modification Trolley

Utilize the comfortable design of car seats to create a multi-functional trolley (such as a mobile workstation with USB charging).

  1. Seat Selection: Take the middle-row seat of a Buick GL8 as an example. It has built-in adjustment functions and a sturdy structure, making it suitable for modification.
  2. Adapter Plate Production: Purchase a ready-made steel adapter plate or cut one from a 4mm thick steel plate by yourself. The hole positions should match the screw holes at the bottom of the seat and the base of the swivel chair.
  3. Base Installation: Select a swivel chair base with five universal wheels (to increase stability) and fix the adapter plate between the seat and the base with screws.
  4. Wiring Connection: If the seat has heating, massage, or USB functions, connect it to the original car wiring or install an independent power supply (such as a 12V lithium battery).
  5. Safety Testing: Push the trolley after loading 50kg to check whether the seat adjustment functions work properly and whether the wheels turn flexibly. Avoid the risk of short circuits in the wiring.

Precautions: Before modification, evaluate the load-bearing capacity of the original chair material. Metal chair legs can have casters installed directly, while plastic chair legs are recommended to be reinforced or have their structure replaced. For car seat modifications, ensure that the electrical system is waterproof and leak-proof.
