Milk Spill on Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

After milk is spilled on an office chair, immediate action should be taken following the three-step process of 'blotting - cleaning - deodorizing'. Here are the specific steps:

1. Immediately Blot the Surface Liquid

Press a clean towel or paper towel onto the area where the milk has seeped out. Repeat multiple times until no more liquid can be blotted up to prevent the milk stains from penetrating into the chair's inner layers. If the penetration is deep, wrap a sponge with an old T-shirt to continue absorbing water and reduce liquid residue. Key point: Do not wipe, as this will spread the contamination.

2. Break Down Residual Milk Stains

Choose a cleaning method based on the chair's material:

  • Fabric Chairs:
    • Baking Soda Method: Mix baking soda with warm water (1:3 ratio) and apply it to the stains. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. For stubborn stains, cover with a baking soda paste (1:2 ratio of baking soda to water) for 15 minutes before cleaning.
    • Enzyme-Based Cleaner: Spray an enzyme-based cleaner (such as collar cleaner) evenly and let it sit for 8 minutes. Then, wipe it clean with a damp cloth 3-4 times. Enzymes can break down milk proteins.
    • Alternative Solutions: For fresh milk stains, soak in cold water for 30 minutes and then scrub with soap. Alternatively, spray a mixture of water and white vinegar (3:1 ratio), let it sit for 5 minutes, and then wipe with a sponge.
  • Leather Chairs:
    • Preferably use a leather-specific cleaner for spraying, or gently wipe with a soft cloth dampened with the residual milk (milk proteins can dissolve similar stains).
    • For stubborn stains, first treat with a dedicated leather foam cleaner, then apply a leather conditioner containing glycerin to prevent cracking. If there is a white frosty residue, lightly wipe with a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio).

Precautions: Milk contains whey protein, which can produce a gel-like substance in environments above 35ยฐC, leading to repeated yellowing. It is recommended to clean with water below 60ยฐC. For leather chairs, avoid using alcohol-based wipes to prevent hardening and cracking.

3. Thorough Drying and Deodorizing

  • Drying: After wiping dry, turn on the air conditioner's warm air at maximum speed and aim it at the chair for 20 minutes, or use a hairdryer on the cool setting to assist in drying. Fabric chairs should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent material aging.
  • Deodorizing: If there is still an odor, place activated charcoal bags or coffee grounds in the chair's inner layers to absorb it, replacing them twice within 48 hours. Alternatively, spray a small amount of fabric disinfectant containing alcohol (use with caution on leather chairs).

4. Treating Stubborn Stains

  • For old yellow stains, spot-treat with an enzyme-based laundry detergent or crush carrots, mix with salt, and apply to the stains, rubbing gently.
  • If the milk stains have hardened, first soften with a warm towel before cleaning to avoid directly scraping and damaging the material.

Prevention Tips: Daily precautions include laying down waterproof pads or using spill-proof cups to reduce the likelihood of spills.
