Depression in the Middle of an Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

Depression in the middle of an office chair can lead to various health hazards and has underlying causes. Different treatment measures can be taken based on the degree of depression.

Health Hazards

  • Disrupting the spinal curve: When the middle of the chair is indented, the lower back is left unsupported, forcing the lumbar spine to sag downward. Over time, this can disrupt the natural curve of the spine and, in severe cases, lead to lumbar disc herniation.
  • Causing local injuries: The coccyx may directly hit the hard base. If it is a plastic stool, the risk is even higher, potentially resulting in fractures. The back of the thighs may be pressed against the edge of the chair, and prolonged sitting can lead to leg numbness and foot swelling due to restricted blood circulation.
  • Leading to scoliosis: Sitting in a chair with a depressed middle can easily cause hunching. The back muscles have to constantly strain to maintain balance, making the erector spinae muscles increasingly tense and potentially leading to scoliosis in the long run.
  • Triggering skin infections: The indentation can easily accumulate sweat and skin flakes, providing a breeding ground for bacteria such as Escherichia coli and thus leading to skin infections.

Causes of Depression

The fundamental cause of depression in an office chair cushion is the loss of elasticity and support of the filling material. This may be a normal mechanical fatigue (aging) phenomenon after the material has been under pressure for a long time, or it may be due to defects in the material quality, improper usage habits of the user, or aging and damage to the chair's bottom support structure.

Treatment Measures

  • Self-repair: If the degree of depression is mild, such as a local indentation of less than 1 centimeter, various self-repair methods can be tried. Gently patting or kneading the depressed area can help restore the elasticity of the filling material. Adjust the mesh fabric to make it more evenly distributed. Place a flat support under the cushion to increase support. Move the chair to a well-ventilated area to dry it and prevent further damage to the material due to moisture. If you have some hands-on skills, you can also open the outer fabric and refill it.
  • Replacing the cushion or the entire chair: If the depression is severe, with obvious "leg-catching" when sitting down and complete loss of support, irreversible sagging and deformation of the material, or if the cost of repairing or replacing original parts exceeds 50% of the original price of the chair, and the chair has been in use for more than 3 years with other components also likely to age successively, and the frame or bottom support structure of the cushion is damaged, it is recommended to replace the cushion or the entire chair.
