Everything You Need to Know About Office Chair Material

Admin November 05, 2026

The main aspects to understand about office chair materials include wood, plastic, metal, leather, mesh, as well as frame and upholstery materials.

Wood is a traditional material for office chairs, such as oak and walnut. Wooden office chairs typically have a high-quality feel and strong stability, creating a solemn and grand atmosphere. They are durable and easy to maintain, developing a unique luster over time. However, wooden office chairs are relatively heavy and inconvenient to move.

Plastic office chairs are an economical choice. They are lightweight, come in a variety of colors and shapes, and can meet the needs of different users. Plastic chairs are easy to clean and can inhibit bacterial growth, making them suitable for public environments like offices. However, plastic materials have a weaker texture, are not sturdy enough, and may deform over long-term use.

Metal office chairs are usually made of aluminum alloy and stainless steel, which are sturdy and durable with a strong texture. Their appearance is simple and elegant, with smooth lines, adding a modern touch to the office environment. In addition, metal chairs have good heat dissipation performance, making them suitable for long-term use. However, metal chairs are relatively hard and may not provide a comfortable sitting experience, and they can make a loud noise when bumped.

Leather office chairs give a high-end and comfortable feeling. Genuine leather office chairs have good breathability, strong wear resistance, and a soft touch, providing good support and comfort. However, genuine leather chairs are expensive and require regular cleaning and maintenance. Faux leather chairs are relatively cheaper, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant, but their texture and breathability are not as good as genuine leather.

Mesh material is a good choice for breathability, especially suitable for summer use. Mesh chairs have good ventilation, allowing air to circulate and keeping the seat dry. They have a fashionable appearance, are lightweight, and are relatively affordable. However, the support of mesh chairs may not be as good as other materials, and long-term use may cause pressure on the waist and back.

In terms of frame materials, solid wood is elegant and durable but expensive and heavy; nylon and PP are plastic materials that are lightweight and wear-resistant, with a lower price, and PP offers more color options; aluminum alloy is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, with the best durability but the highest price; steel is sturdy and durable with a low price, but the surface electroplated coating is prone to wear, leading to internal oxidation and rusting. Among upholstery materials, genuine leather is high-end but requires maintenance; faux leather is economical and easy to clean but has poor breathability; suede leather is soft and comfortable but requires regular care; fabric is low-priced, comes in many colors, and is easy to clean but has poor wear resistance; PU leather is a synthetic material that is breathable, waterproof, and easy to clean, with a moderate price but slightly inferior durability to genuine leather.
