Office Chair Standard: What to Know Before You Buy
The standards and key points to understand before purchasing an office chair include industry norms, safety recalls, quality inspections, ergonomics, and market brands.

I. Industry Norms and Standards
China implemented the standard for office furniture - office chairs (t/spemf 0003โ2020) on June 4, 2020. This standard covers product classification, raw material requirements, technical indicators (such as dimensions, appearance, physical and chemical properties, mechanical properties), gas spring safety, flame retardancy, and limits on harmful substances. It also specifies inspection rules, labeling, packaging, transportation, and storage requirements. From July 18 to August 16, 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology solicited public opinions on the revision of this standard. Before purchasing, you can keep an eye on the latest version updates.
II. Safety Recalls and Risk Avoidance
It is crucial to check whether the product is subject to safety recalls. For example, in March 2023, the United States and Canada recalled 12 batches of office chairs made in China due to the risk of falls caused by backrest breakage, resulting in 10 injuries. In January 2025, the United States recalled the WorkPro Momentum series due to bolt failures, which led to 7 fall reports (including 2 minor injuries). Before purchasing, you can check the product safety records through the National Market Supervision Administration's Defective Product Management Center or international recall websites.
III. Quality Inspection and Stability
In September 2024, a sampling inspection by China's State Administration for Market Regulation showed that 15 batches of office chairs were deemed unqualified due to substandard stability, mainly manifesting as a risk of tipping over. When selecting an office chair, it is necessary to test the structural stability of the chair body, focusing on the material of the five-star base (steel or aluminum alloy is recommended), the certification of the gas rod (it should pass BIFMA or SGS certification), and the load-bearing capacity of the chassis (it is advisable to choose a product with a load-bearing capacity of โฅ136 kg).
IV. Ergonomics and Comfort
The core parameters include:
- Seat height adjustment: Ensure that the soles of the feet are flat on the ground, and the angle between the thighs and calves is 95ยฐ-100ยฐ.
- Lumbar support: Give priority to independently adjustable lumbar supports that can be moved up and down, with the support point located at the third to fourth lumbar vertebrae.
- Backrest angle: Support a 100ยฐ-135ยฐ backward tilt lock to disperse spinal pressure.
- Material breathability: Mesh materials have better breathability than leather and are more suitable for long-term use.
V. Market and Brand Selection
China accounts for 65% of the global export volume of office chairs, with the United States being the largest consumer market (accounting for 17.83%). Among domestic brands, FLEXISPOT and Nouhaus are positioned in the mid-to-high-end segment, while SIHOO has outstanding monthly sales. It is recommended to give priority to brands that have passed the ISO 9001 quality management system certification, offer a warranty of more than 10 years, and check whether the products are labeled as compliant with the target market standards (such as the EU CE certification and the US BIFMA certification).
