Office Chair Makes Noise

Admin October 12, 2026

An office chair making noise can be caused by various reasons and requires targeted troubleshooting and resolution.

I. Connection Component Issues

  1. Loose Screws: Screws at connection points such as the backrest, armrests, base, and chair legs can loosen over time due to prolonged stress or frequent movement, creating gaps between components that produce friction and noise when pressure is applied. Tightening all loose screws can resolve the issue.
  2. Lack of Lubrication in the Base Rotating Shaft: For chairs with a rocking and reclining function, when the lubricating oil on the internal metal springs and rotating shafts dries up, direct metal-to-metal friction can generate noise. Applying lubricating oil to the metal rotating shafts and connection gaps can eliminate the noise.
  3. Wear and Tear on the Gas Cylinder and Five-Star Base: The contact points between the top of the gas cylinder and the base, and between the bottom of the gas cylinder and the five-star base, can wear down over time due to prolonged weight-bearing, creating gaps that lead to wobbling and friction noise. Check the degree of wear; if it is minor, apply lubricating oil; if severe, the gas cylinder needs to be replaced.

II. Material Aging Issues

  1. Deformation of the Plastic Frame: The thin plastic frames of low-cost chairs can easily deform under prolonged sitting pressure, causing structural compression and gap friction noise. This type of issue is difficult to completely repair, and it is recommended to replace the chair.
  2. Poor Quality or Aging of the Wheels: Cheap hard plastic wheels or aged and hardened rubber wheels can produce significant noise when rubbing against hard floors, and loose wheel structures can also cause noise. Replacing them with quiet PU casters can reduce friction noise.

III. Installation and Foreign Object Issues

  1. Mismatched or Loose Installation: If the wheel interface size does not match the chair leg base or the installation is not in place, it can lead to wobbling and impact during rolling. Check and tighten all connection points to ensure a secure installation.
  2. Foreign Object Entanglement and Dust Accumulation: Hair, pet hair, and fiber threads can become entangled around the wheel axles, or dust and sand particles can get stuck in the bearing gaps, causing rolling stuttering and friction noise. Deep clean the wheel axles, disassemble and remove entangled objects, or use static electricity toๅธ้™„ (this Chinese word means 'absorb', you may use an appropriate English word like 'remove' based on context) dust.
  3. Lack of Lubrication in the Bearings: If the internal bearings of the wheels are dry and stutter, friction noise can occur during rolling. Use a clean cloth to dip a small amount of sewing machine oil, light mechanical lubricating oil, or special maintenance oil, and apply it to the wheel axles and bearing gaps for lubrication and maintenance.

Daily Maintenance Suggestions: Regularly check and tighten screws, avoid exposing the chair to humid or high-temperature environments for extended periods to reduce the risk of plastic component aging; focus on cleaning the wheel axles and bearing areas during cleaning to prevent foreign object accumulation; if the noise persists, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel to check for structural damage.
