Headache from Lying on an Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

Headaches from lying on an office chair are primarily related to improper nap postures. When sleeping on an office chair, the body is in an unnatural position, and the head and neck are prone to unnatural compression. This compression can affect local blood circulation, leading to insufficient blood supply to the brain and potentially causing headaches. Additionally, incorrect sleeping postures can adversely affect the neck and back muscles. When muscles remain tense or twisted for extended periods, they are prone to fatigue and soreness, and this discomfort may also spread upward to the head, triggering headaches.

To alleviate and prevent such situations, the following measures can be taken:

  • Choose a flat lying position: When taking a nap, try to avoid curling up or sleeping at an angle on the office chair. Instead, find a place where you can lie flat, such as a folding bed or sofa. A flat lying position allows all parts of the body to relax naturally, reducing compression on the head and neck, facilitating blood circulation, and lowering the risk of headaches.
  • Use a pillow of appropriate height: If you can only rest briefly on the office chair, choose a pillow of appropriate height to support your head. The height of the pillow should keep your head level with your body, avoiding being too high or too low. A pillow that is too high can cause the cervical spine to flex forward, increasing pressure on the cervical spine; a pillow that is too low may cause the head to tilt backward, compressing blood vessels in the brain, both of which are detrimental to blood circulation in the head.
  • Adjust the angle of the office chair: If your office chair has adjustable features, try adjusting the backrest to a relatively comfortable angle so that your body can better conform to the chair, reducing body distortion and muscle tension. At the same time, place cushions at your waist and neck to provide additional support and reduce muscle strain.
  • Control nap duration: Nap duration should not be too long, generally 20-30 minutes is appropriate. Prolonged naps can easily lead to deep sleep, and waking up may result in dizziness, headaches, and other discomforts.
