Office Chair Lumbar Stretch

Admin October 11, 2026

Multiple lumbar stretching exercises can be performed on an office chair to help relieve lower back fatigue and enhance lower back flexibility. Here are some specific exercises and key points:

Seated Twist: This exercise primarily stretches the right side of the lower back and back (when twisting to the left rear). Sit upright on the chair with your feet flat on the ground and shoulder-width apart to provide stable support for your body. Place your right hand on the outside of your left knee and your left hand on the back of the chair behind you, which serves as an auxiliary force point for twisting. Inhale and straighten your back to keep your spine in a natural extended state; exhale and slowly twist your body to the left rear. During the twisting process, feel the stretch in the right side of your lower back and back. Hold for 15 - 30 seconds and then repeat on the other side.

Chair Back Stretch: This focuses on stretching the chest and shoulder-back. Lean against the chair back, cross your fingers behind your head, and open your elbows as wide as possible to expand your chest. Lean your body slightly backward. At this time, you can clearly feel the stretch in your chest and shoulder-back. Hold for 20 - 30 seconds. This exercise helps relieve muscle tension in the chest and shoulder-back caused by prolonged desk work.

Seated Forward Bend: This mainly stretches the back of the thighs and the lower back. Sit upright, straighten and bring your legs together, and then slowly bend forward, trying to reach your feet with your hands. During the bending process, control the force to avoid excessive bending that could cause damage to your lumbar spine. Feel the stretch in the back of your thighs and lower back and hold for about 30 seconds.

Hip Stretch: This can stretch the hip muscles and indirectly relieve lower back pressure. Place your right leg on your left leg, push your right hand to the left, and turn your head and body to the right together. You can lean your body slightly forward and feel the stretch in your hips and lower back.

Stretching the Iliopsoas Muscle: Sit on the front edge of the chair, extend one leg backward, and push your hip forward slightly. Be careful not to extend your lumbar spine forward to avoid putting excessive pressure on it. You can also directly do a lunge, sink your hip downward and push it forward, while keeping your lumbar spine stable.

Stretching the Quadratus Lumborum Muscle: Use your hand to block your leg to prevent lumbar spine rotation, and extend your other hand forward and upward. Your thoracic spine can curve slightly to the side. You can also achieve a certain stretching effect without raising your hand. Feel the stretch in your quadratus lumborum muscle.
