Office Chair Leg Loosening

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair leg loosening can be repaired specifically according to different situations, as follows:

Loose Screws

If the chair leg is loose due to loose screws, first determine the type of screw. Use a Phillips screwdriver for Phillips-head screws and a flat-head screwdriver for flat-head screws. Tighten the screws clockwise. If the screws are stripped and cannot be tightened, the following methods can be used to increase friction: Wrap 1 - 2 turns of Teflon tape around the screw rod, or add a small washer. Then, drizzle a small amount of 502 glue into the screw hole (be careful not to drip it onto the chair body surface). After that, the screw will be more secure when screwed in.

Loose Mortise-and-Tenon Joints

  • Cracked and loose mortise-and-tenon joints or cross-braces on wooden chairs: First, clean the dust from the gaps. Squeeze white wood glue into the gaps, align the components, and then fix them with clamps or ropes. Let it sit for 24 hours until the glue is completely dry, and then remove the fixation. At this point, the chair will no longer wobble.
  • Loose joints on old-fashioned wooden chairs (without screws): Apply a little white wood glue to the tenon position, knock the tenon back in, clamp it tightly, and then fix it with ropes or clamps. Remove it after the glue dries. Before applying the glue, clean the old glue from the surface of the tenon. Wipe it with a damp cloth and then apply new glue for better adhesion.
  • Using wood shavings for filling: Find dry solid wood shavings or wood planer shavings. The finer, the better. Disassemble the loose chair leg, tightly pack the wood shavings into the gaps of the tenon, fill and compact them, and then reinstall them in place. For a more secure effect, you can use a small amount of woodworking glue. Dip the wood shavings in a little glue and then fill them. Compact them and let them sit and dry.

Foot Pad Issues

If one of the four foot pads is crooked or has fallen off, it will cause the entire chair to be uneven and wobble. In this case, replace it with a same-sized non-slip foot pad. After leveling the chair, if the foot pad has built-in fixing screws, tighten the screws. If it is a press-type foot pad, snap it tightly onto the bottom of the chair leg to ensure that all four foot pads are firmly in contact with the ground, and the wobbling sensation will quickly disappear.
