Cleaning Dirty Leather on Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

If the leather on your office chair is dirty, you can clean it following these steps, paying attention to operational details to protect the leather material:

1. Selection and Testing of Cleaning Agents Use a specialized leather cleaner and avoid products containing acidic or alkaline ingredients (such as soap and dish detergent), as these can damage the natural oil layer of the leather, leading to cracking or fading. Before the first use, test it in an inconspicuous area such as the inside of the chair back or the bottom of the armrest: apply a small amount of the cleaner, wait 5-10 minutes to observe for any discoloration or bubbling, and only proceed with full use after confirming no abnormalities.

2. Basic Cleaning Steps

  • Dust Removal: Use a dry soft-bristled brush or a vacuum cleaner (equipped with a soft-bristled brush head) to gently sweep the surface and remove loose dust. Do not wipe directly with a dry cloth, as the friction can scratch the leather surface, creating fine scratches.
  • Wiping: Spray the cleaner onto a soft cotton towel (do not spray directly onto the leather) and wipe the stained area in a gentle circular motion, applying even pressure to avoid differences in gloss due to excessive local friction.
  • Drying: Immediately after wiping, use a dry cotton cloth to absorb moisture, preventing water stains from penetrating and causing the leather to deform or mold. If the environment is humid, you can use a hairdryer on the cool setting (at a distance of more than 30 cm) to assist in drying. Avoid direct sunlight, as UV rays can accelerate leather aging and cause cracking.

3. Treatment of Special Stains

  • Oil Stains: If an oil ring appears at the edge, sprinkle a small amount of salt, add 2-3 drops of salad oil, and wipe with a soft cloth in a circular motion. The abrasive action of the salt can absorb the oil, and finally, wipe away any residue with a dry towel.
  • Dust Accumulation in Hard-to-Reach Areas: Dust tends to accumulate in the chair's casters. You can wet old newspapers and tear them into pieces, then evenly spread them on the floor. The absorbency of the wet newspapers can capture floating dust, making it especially suitable for cleaning hard-to-reach areas.

4. Post-Cleaning Maintenance After cleaning and when the leather is completely dry, you can apply a leather conditioner (which should be from the same brand as the cleaner or compatible) to replenish the natural oils, enhance flexibility, and improve stain resistance. Apply the conditioner thinly and evenly to avoid a sticky surface due to buildup.

Precautions

  • It is recommended to clean the leather once a month and perform daily dust removal with a soft-bristled brush once a week.
  • Avoid using organic solvents such as alcohol and gasoline, as they can dissolve the surface coating of the leather.
  • If the leather shows cracks or fading, contact a professional repair service. Attempting to repair it yourself may worsen the damage.
