Authenticity of Office Chair Leather

Admin October 11, 2026

You can determine the authenticity of the leather on an office chair by methods such as scratching the leather surface and observing its characteristics.

Scratching the leather surface: Give the leather surface a firm scratch with your hand. Although the specific effects are not detailed, the scratch marks on genuine leather are relatively natural and recover quickly. In contrast, synthetic or low-quality leather may leave obvious and hard-to-recover marks when scratched. However, this method should only be used as a preliminary auxiliary judgment.

Observing leather characteristics:

  • Grain and texture: Genuine top-grain leather has clear grains and a natural texture, which is due to the fiber structure of natural leather. On the market, some chairs labeled as 'top-grain cowhide' are actually made of pseudo-leather, which is created by splicing scraps and applying a film with embossed patterns. The texture of such pseudo-leather is often unnatural, possibly artificially printed, and lacks the natural growth marks and variations of genuine leather. Although synthetic or second-layer leather may look similar in appearance, their textures are usually more regular and rigid, lacking the natural randomness of genuine leather.
  • Pressing and resilience: When pressing genuine leather, natural creases will appear, and it will bounce back quickly, leaving no lingering creases. This is because genuine leather has good elasticity and toughness, allowing it to quickly return to its original shape. In contrast, low-quality or synthetic leather may recover slowly from creases after being pressed, or even leave obvious indentations, indicating poor elasticity and toughness.
  • Odor: When you smell genuine leather up close, there is no pungent chemical smell, only a faint natural leather fragrance. If you detect a pungent odor, it is likely that a large amount of chemical agents have been used in the treatment, suggesting it may be low-quality or synthetic leather.
  • Touch: Genuine leather feels slightly cool, flexible, and has a sense of vitality with fine granularity, which is a manifestation of its fiber structure. In contrast, synthetic or second-layer leather may feel smoother, lacking the delicate feel and granularity of genuine leather. It also has poor breathability and can easily cause sweating during use.
  • Usage effect: Genuine high-quality leather will develop a natural patina over time with use, becoming more and more textured, rather than peeling or blistering in a short period. In contrast, low-quality or synthetic leather is prone to problems such as peeling and cracking after a period of use.
