Office Chair Knob Recline
Admin October 17, 2026
The core operation for an office chair to achieve the recline function through a knob is to adjust the backrest resistance or unlock the recline mode. The specific steps depend on the model design but generally follow the following logic:

I. Basic Operating Principles
Most ergonomic chairs are equipped with a circular knob on the right (or left) side of the seat, which serves two functions:
- Adjusting Backrest Resistance: Rotating the knob clockwise increases the resistance when the chair back reclines, providing a stronger sense of support; rotating it counterclockwise reduces the resistance, making reclining easier. For example, users can adjust the resistance according to their body weight or usage scenarios (such as working or resting) to avoid reclining too quickly or slowly.
- Unlocking Recline Mode: Some models require the knob to unlock the recline function. To operate, first rotate the knob to the "unlocked" state (usually accompanied by a slight click or change in resistance), then lean back on the chair back, which can now be freely adjusted in angle. After adjustment, push the knob back into place to lock the angle and prevent accidental rebound.
II. Special Designs of High-End Models
Some high-end models (such as the Habit P4 Pro) have upgraded the knob function:
- Multi-Angle Adjustment: The knobs on both sides of the seat support 4-level angle locking. Users can rotate the knob to switch between different recline angles (such as 90ยฐ, 110ยฐ, 130ยฐ, 155ยฐ) to meet the needs of working, reading, or taking a nap.
- One-Touch Flat Mode: Some models integrate a footrest function. After rotating the knob to a specific level, the chair back can automatically recline to a 155ยฐ flat position with a footrest, eliminating the need for additional operations on levers or pull rods.
- Stepless Speed Control: High-end models may adopt a stepless speed control design, where the rotation amplitude of the knob is linearly related to the inclination angle of the chair back. Users can finely control the inclination speed to enhance comfort.
III. Operating Precautions
- Locating the Knob Position: Before adjustment, lean forward to observe the connection between the bottom of the seat and the chair back to confirm the specific position of the knob or adjustment lever and avoid accidentally touching other components.
- Locking the Angle: After adjusting the chair back angle, be sure to push the knob or adjustment lever back into place to lock it, preventing accidental rebound of the chair back due to gravity or external force and causing safety hazards.
- Composite Function Design: Some models may combine levers and knobs to achieve composite functions (such as first unlocking the recline with a lever and then adjusting the resistance with a knob). Refer to the instruction manual for operation.
It is recommended to consult the instruction manual of the specific model first. The designs of different brands (such as Herman Miller and Ergohuman) may vary. Correct operation can extend the service life of the chair and enhance safety.
