Office Chair Keeps Sliding Down

Admin October 11, 2026

The most common reason for an office chair constantly sliding down is the aging or poor sealing of the gas lift cylinder. This can be resolved by checking the condition of the gas lift cylinder, troubleshooting other component issues, and choosing to contact after-sales service or replace the gas lift cylinder yourself.

Fault Cause Analysis

The gas lift cylinder is a core component, and there are four main reasons for its failure:

  • Aging or wear of the sealing ring: After long-term use, the sealing ring ages, leading to the leakage of high-pressure nitrogen gas. The insufficient air pressure cannot maintain the locking.
  • Poor quality of the gas lift cylinder itself: The gas lift cylinders used in low-priced products have insufficient nitrogen purity and insufficient thickness of the cylinder wall, resulting in unreliable initial performance.
  • Loose adjustment screw: The adjustment screw connected to the gas lift cylinder is loose, affecting the overall structural stability.
  • Common problems of low-priced and inferior products: For chairs priced below 200 yuan for a long time, the materials and workmanship of the core components are difficult to guarantee, and problems are prone to occur.

Fault Symptom Diagnosis

Gas lift cylinder failures have typical symptoms: slow automatic sinking, inability to rebound with weak pressing, audible air leakage sounds, and tilted seats. A preliminary diagnosis can be made using the "three-step self-check method": Press and test to feel the rebound force and cushioning; sit quietly and listen for air leakage sounds; observe whether the chair automatically sinks or is not level. Before determining that it is a gas lift cylinder problem, it is also necessary to quickly rule out other possibilities, such as checking whether there are foreign objects blocking the adjustment valve/locking mechanism at the bottom of the chair, confirming whether all connecting screws and bolts are loose and tightening them, and for electric height-adjustable chairs, checking the power supply, circuit, and motor.

Solutions

  • Contact the official after-sales service: Find the purchase receipt and check the brand and warranty period. During the warranty period, directly contact the brand's official customer service to enjoy free repair or replacement of parts. After the warranty period has expired, you can inquire about paid repair services or channels for purchasing original parts.
  • Replace the gas lift cylinder yourself: This option can be chosen when the chair is out of warranty and the official repair cost is too high. Prepare tools (a hammer or a large adjustable wrench, a little lubricating oil), purchase a qualified new gas lift cylinder, confirm that the specifications match the chair, and give priority to products with SGS Level 4 certification, TUV certification, or that comply with safety standards such as GB/T 2280 - 2016. Avoid gas lift cylinders with excessively low prices (e.g., below 40 yuan). It is strictly prohibited to disassemble, drill holes in, or repair a faulty gas lift cylinder yourself to prevent the risk of explosion.
