Insect Infestation in Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

The main reasons for insect infestation in office chairs are wood dampness, egg attachment, insufficient material treatment, and improper maintenance. Prevention and control require taking corresponding measures based on the specific causes.

Reasons for Insect Infestation in Office Chairs

  1. Wood Dampness: If office chairs are exposed to a humid environment or high indoor humidity for a long time, the wood is prone to wet rot, providing growth conditions for bacteria and mold, which in turn attract small insects.
  2. Egg Attachment: The wood may carry insect eggs before processing. Under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, these eggs hatch into larvae, which breed inside or on the surface of the office chair.
  3. Insufficient Material Treatment: If no insect-proof and moisture-proof treatments (such as high-temperature fumigation or soaking in insect-repellent agents) are carried out during the production process, the wood's insect resistance will be significantly reduced.
  4. Improper Maintenance: Failure to regularly clean and keep the office chair dry during daily use, or long-term stacking of miscellaneous items leading to poor ventilation, will increase the risk of insect infestation.

Prevention and Control Measures

  1. Preventive Treatment

    • Select Dry Wood: Choose wood with low moisture content and good quality when purchasing. If the moisture content is high, saw it and ventilate it to dry after sawing, avoiding direct sunlight.
    • Apply Protective Materials: For office chairs not yet infested by insects, evenly apply raw tung oil, shellac varnish, or paint on the surface and inner walls to isolate the wood borers from air contact.
  2. Chemical Control

    • Wood Pretreatment: If the wood is already infested before processing, dissolve one part of boric acid and one part of borax in 30 parts of water, repeatedly apply the solution, and dry it before making the office chair. Apply the solution again after the furniture is made.
    • Treatment for Established Infestation:
      • Prepare a 2%โ€“5% insecticidal solution with kerosene and apply it 3โ€“4 times. For larger insect holes, use absorbent cotton soaked in the solution to block them.
      • Mix dichlorvos with water at a ratio of 1:5 to prepare a solution, and spray it thoroughly on the office chair. Continuously spray 3โ€“5 times and then let it stand for 8 hours.
  3. Physical Methods

    • Cleaning and Drying: Remove and clean the items inside the office chair. Dry items that cannot be washed in the sun. Wipe the office chair with a disinfectant and ensure thorough ventilation and drying.
    • Sun Exposure and Diesel Application: On a sunny day, move the office chair to a sunny place and expose it for several hours. Use a brush to apply diesel oil all over the chair. Repeat the sun exposure and diesel application until the insects die, and then clean and dry the chair.
    • Blocking Insect Holes: When infested by wood borers or termites, drip a small amount of insecticidal solution into the insect holes or stuff them with chili peppers or Sichuan pepper powder.
