Methods for Locking the Backrest of an Office Chair
Admin October 17, 2026
If you need to lock the backrest of an office chair, you can refer to the following methods for operation:

- Adjust the adjustment handle: Most office chairs have a handle specifically for adjusting the backrest located beneath the chair. To lock the backrest, try pushing this handle in to see if it can fix the backrest in place. If you need to adjust the angle of the backrest, press and hold the handle, apply backward pressure with your back simultaneously, and release the handle once you reach the desired angle. At this point, the backrest should be locked in its current position.
- Use the adjustment lever: While sitting on the chair, locate the adjustment lever at the rear beneath the seat. Pull the lever while applying a slight backward lean with your back, and then release the lever. The backrest will be fixed at the corresponding angle. If you want to restore the free movement of the backrest, pull the lever again, apply a bit of force with your back, and the backrest will spring back.
- Operation of cable-controlled office chairs: For office chairs with cable control, after leaning into the desired position, press the button once, lean slightly against the backrest, and when you hear a 'click' sound, it indicates that the backrest has been successfully locked.
- Handle and knob adjustment: Some office chairs have a handle on the right side. Pushing it in to the left locks the backrest, and pulling it out to the right unlocks it. In addition, there may be a cylindrical knob on the base. Turning it clockwise increases the rebound support force, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. By adjusting this knob, you can also indirectly affect the locking status of the backrest.
- Operation of lever-controlled office chairs: If the chair uses a lever control method, pulling the lever beneath the seat downwards will lock the backrest.
If, after trying the above methods, the backrest of the office chair still cannot be locked, there may be a malfunction with the mechanism spring on the base. In this case, it is recommended to contact the merchant and inquire about the possibility of replacing the new mechanism spring to restore the normal use of the office chair. During the operation process, be sure to follow the instructions or the above methods carefully to avoid damaging the office chair or causing personal injury due to improper operation.
