Solutions for Office Chair Immobility
Admin October 08, 2026
Solutions for office chair immobility should be tailored to the specific issue. Here are common situations and their solutions:

Office Chair Wheels Not Moving
- Foreign Object Blockage: If there are paper scraps, hair, or other debris around the wheels, it can hinder their rotation. Carefully inspect the area around the wheels and use tweezers or a small brush to gently remove any foreign objects.
- Wheel Damage: When the rubber part of the wheel is severely worn or has cracks, the wheel cannot roll properly. In this case, purchase new wheels that are compatible and replace them, ensuring to choose products that match the original wheel's size and model.
- Axle Issues: A loose or rusty axle can cause the wheels to rotate poorly. If it's a loose screw, use a screwdriver to tighten it. If the axle is rusty, first spray a rust remover to eliminate the rust, and then drip in lubricating oil (such as sewing machine oil) for lubrication.
- Floor Factors: An uneven floor or excessive friction, such as on a carpet surface, can affect wheel rotation. Move the chair to a flat and smooth floor (such as a wooden or tiled floor) to improve the situation.
Office Chair Fails to Return to Upright Position After Reclining
- Safety Check and Foreign Object Removal: Ensure the chair is placed steadily and there is sufficient space around it. Check the bottom of the backrest's pivot point and the connection between the seat and the base for any foreign objects (such as cables or fabric fibers). Thoroughly clean them and then try to return the chair to the upright position.
- Operating the Control Lever: Locate the metal lever under the seat that controls the recline. Pull it out completely and hold it until the backrest returns to the upright position, and then push it back into the fixing hole to lock the angle.
- Manual Assistance and Spring Check: If the backrest still fails to spring back, while the control lever is pulled out, use your hand to assist in pushing the backrest forward to the upright position and feel for any abnormal resistance during the return process. If the spring is completely powerless, it may be ineffective and needs to be replaced.
Office Swivel Chair Not Rotating
- Wheel Inspection: Turn the swivel chair upside down and check if the surface of the bottom wheels is worn unevenly or has cracks. If so, replace the wheels.
- Axle Lubrication: Locate the axle at the center of the swivel chair. Use a syringe or an oil can to inject an appropriate amount of lubricating oil (such as sewing machine oil) and rotate the chair to allow the oil to fully lubricate the inside of the axle.
- Connection Inspection: Check if the screws at the connections between the armrests and the seat, and between the seat and the base are loose. Use a screwdriver to tighten any loose screws.
- Gas Cylinder Inspection: Observe if the gas cylinder is bent or deformed. If there is a problem, contact a professional repair technician or replace it with a new one.
Other Situations and Lubrication Treatments
- Height Adjustment Stuttering/Squeaking: If there is a squeaking sound or the chair gets stuck when adjusting the height, apply an appropriate amount of lubricating grease to the metal friction surface at the connection between the base and the gas cylinder.
- Inflexible Rotation: If it is difficult to rotate the seat or there is a friction sound, apply white lithium grease (recommended viscosity grade NLGI 2) to the track of the base's swivel plate.
- Poor Wheel Rolling: Every year, use a cotton swab to apply lubricating grease to the wheel axles to keep the wheels rolling smoothly.
