How to Lower the Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

Lowering the height of an office chair can generally be done following these steps:

First, locate the adjustment mechanism. Office chairs have various adjustment methods, commonly using a lever or knob beneath the seat to adjust the height. The lever is usually located at the front of the seat bottom, sometimes on either side; the knob may be in the middle beneath the seat. Additionally, for pneumatic office chairs, the adjustment mechanism may be a lever.

Next, adjust the height.

  • Lever adjustment: If it's a lever-type adjustment, grasp the lever and pull it downward. Pulling the lever downward will lower the seat height. You may need to apply a bit of force while pulling and continue the operation until you reach the desired height. For some office stools, pressing the lever while sitting on them will make the chair descend.
  • Knob adjustment: For knob-type adjustment, turning the knob clockwise will lower the seat height. While rotating, pay attention to the change in seat height and stop rotating when you reach the appropriate height.
  • Lever adjustment (pneumatic model): For pneumatic office chairs, repeatedly push the lever up and down (pump the lever) to raise or lower the seat. Pushing the lever downward will lower the seat height.

Finally, adjust to the proper height. After sitting down, ensure that your feet can rest flat on the ground and your thighs are parallel to the ground. If the seat is too high, your legs will be suspended, increasing leg pressure and easily causing fatigue. If the seat is too low, your knees will be higher than your hips, affecting your sitting posture and comfort. Prolonged poor sitting posture may also have adverse effects on your health. Additionally, you can make adjustments from a standing position. Adjust the seat height of the chair until the front of the chair is just below your knees, which will better ensure the correctness and comfort of your sitting posture.
