Office Chair Height Range and Adjustment Methods

Admin October 17, 2026

The reasonable range and adjustment methods for the height of an office chair are as follows:

I. National Standards and Mainstream Ranges

According to the national standard GB3326-1997, the seat height of an office chair should be controlled between 400 and 440 millimeters. However, some sources indicate that the range compliant with the national standard is 40 to 50 centimeters (i.e., 400 to 500 millimeters). Mainstream products on the market typically support free adjustment within the range of 360 to 480 millimeters to accommodate different heights and usage scenarios.

II. Adjustment Recommendations for Different Height Groups

  1. Short individuals (under 160 centimeters): It is recommended to adjust the seat to the lowest setting (approximately 360 millimeters) to ensure that both feet can firmly touch the ground, avoiding excessive pressure on the legs due to suspension.
  2. Tall individuals (over 180 centimeters): When paired with a standard 75-centimeter desk, ensure that the thighs are parallel to the ground, the elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle, and the height difference between the desk and chair is controlled between 28 and 32 centimeters. If the feet cannot be placed flat on the ground, a footrest can be added for assistance.

III. Adjustment Methods and Precautions

  1. Seated Adjustment:

    • After sitting down, adjust the height by pulling up the control lever under the seat (some models may require turning a knob). Pneumatic lift chairs can be fine-tuned by repeatedly pumping the lever.
    • After adjusting to a comfortable position, check if the following conditions are met:
      • Both feet are flat on the ground, and the palm of the hand can easily fit under the thighs;
      • The knees and hips are basically level, avoiding pressure on the legs from the front edge;
      • The elbows are naturally bent at a 90-degree angle, and the desk height is level with the elbows.
  2. Standing-Assisted Adjustment:

    • If seated adjustment is difficult, stand in front of the chair, align the front of the chair with the area below the knees, and then sit down for fine-tuning.
    • When operating a computer, ensure that the eyes are level with the top of the monitor. If the monitor height is not adjustable, adjust the seat height to align the line of sight horizontally.
  3. Special Scenario Handling:

    • Feet cannot reach the ground: Add an adjustable footrest to keep the legs naturally hanging down;
    • Legs are trapped: If the front edge of the chair presses against the thighs, adjust the seat height upward appropriately;
    • Long-term use: Regularly adjust the seat height to avoid fatigue caused by a single posture.

IV. Healthy Usage Principles

The seat height should be adjusted in coordination with the desk and monitor heights, with the core goal of maintaining a natural upright spine to reduce pressure on the lumbar and cervical vertebrae. If discomfort persists after adjustment, it is recommended to check if the chair provides sufficient lumbar support or consult a professional for an ergonomic assessment.
