Office Chair Height Adjustment Demonstration

Admin October 17, 2026

The height adjustment of office chairs is primarily achieved through a gas lift cylinder, with its core principle being the control of seat height via changes in air pressure. The operation process is divided into two stages: adjustment and fixation.

Structure and Air Pressure Principle of the Gas Lift Cylinder

The gas lift cylinder is the core component for height adjustment in office chairs. One end is connected to the bottom of the seat, while the piston end is fixed to the top of the outer casing. At the top, there is a small push valve controlled by a height adjustment lever. When the piston is outside the cylinder, the atmospheric pressure inside and outside the cylinder is equal, and the seat is in its initial balanced state. When the user pushes the piston upward (e.g., by applying pressure when sitting down), the air inside the cylinder is compressed, and the internal pressure becomes higher than the external pressure, generating a net supporting force that allows the seat to bear the weight of the human body and remain stable. To lower the seat height, some gas needs to be released through the control valve, reducing the internal pressure and, consequently, the supporting force.

Specific Steps for Height Adjustment

  1. Adjustment Stage: The user needs to first squat down or stand up to ensure that the seat is not under pressure (i.e., the weight of the human body is not pressing on the seat). Then, pull the height adjustment lever. The lever opens the small push valve through a mechanical structure, allowing the gas inside the cylinder to communicate with the outside. Since the internal pressure of the cylinder is higher than the external pressure, the gas naturally flows out, the piston moves downward, and the seat descends accordingly. Conversely, to raise the seat, the user can pull the adjustment lever upward while the seat is not under pressure (some designs may require the assistance of body weight), allowing external air to enter the cylinder, increasing the internal pressure, and pushing the piston upward.
  2. Fixation Stage: When the seat reaches the desired height, release the adjustment lever, and the small push valve closes, separating the gas into two chambers before and after the piston. At this point, the internal pressure of the cylinder reaches a new balance, and the seat is fixed at the current height due to air pressure support, even when a person sits on it without further sinking.

Expansion of Dynamic Adjustment Functions

Some high-end office chairs (such as the Qingxian Dynamic Ergonomic Chair) also feature dynamic adjustment functions. For example, the headrest can be adjusted in height directly by pulling. These designs typically use independent mechanical structures or pneumatic devices, independent of the main lift cylinder, allowing users to adjust the positions of local components at any time according to their needs, enhancing comfort.

Summary: The height adjustment of office chairs is achieved through changes in air pressure in the gas lift cylinder. During operation, ensure that the seat is not under pressure to open the control valve, and release the valve after adjustment to fix the height. The dynamic adjustment function further expands usage scenarios to meet personalized needs.
