Methods for Removing Hair from Office Chair Gears
Admin October 16, 2026
There are multiple methods to remove hair entangled in the gears (wheels) of office chairs, as follows:

Emergency Tool Method
- Tweezers or needle-nose pliers: Insert medical-grade stainless steel tweezers or needle-nose pliers along the gap of the roller, rotate the wheel in the opposite direction of the hair entanglement to grasp the entangled material.
- Car vacuum cleaner: Use the crevice tool of a car vacuum cleaner against the wheel gap, turn it to the highest setting, and repeatedly suction for 10 seconds. This is particularly effective for freshly dropped hair fragments.
- Toothpicks, hairpins, or pointed tweezers: Hook the clumped hair, invert the office chair on a stable surface, hook the hair strands, and then rotate the tool clockwise while pulling outward; for rubber-material casters, you can use a handheld vacuum cleaner to suction while picking.
- Paper clip: Bend a paper clip into a '7' shape, ensuring the end length and angle can just fit into the wheel axle gap, then rotate this '7'-shaped tool to slowly hook out the hair.
Deep Cleaning Method
- Warm water with dishwashing detergent soak: Remove the wheel axle and soak it in warm water (around 50ยฐC) with dishwashing detergent, brush along the grain with a soft-bristled toothbrush; for stubborn entanglement, use a sewing needle and lighter to heat the needle tip and pierce the hair clump to carbonize and break it.
- Hot water soak: Fill a basin with hot water (around 70ยฐC) and submerge the caster for about 15 minutes. The softened hair strands can be easily rubbed off with your fingernails. Note that nylon-material casters should not be soaked for a long time.
- Oil softening: Drip peanut oil or olive oil into the wheel axle gap and let it sit for half an hour. This will dissolve oily dirt and facilitate the removal of the entangled material as a whole.
Disassembly Cleaning Method
- Lever, small scissors, and tweezers: Insert one lever into the gap and slightly pry it open, then insert another lever on the other side of the same central axle and forcefully pry it open. Next, use small scissors to cut the hair ring, use tweezers to pull out the remaining hair, and finally press the plate back into place.
- Flat-head screwdriver: Insert two flat-head screwdrivers into the gap, pry open the universal wheel to clean the entangled hair. Be careful with the force to avoid damaging the wheel. After prying it open, thoroughly clean the hair and then press it firmly back into place.
Direct Replacement Method
If the hair entanglement is too severe and cleaning is time-consuming and laborious, consider directly replacing the wheel. Universal wheels of the same model are available for purchase on e-commerce platforms at affordable prices.
