Heightening the Front of an Office Chair

Admin October 22, 2026

If you need to heighten the front of an office chair, you can choose an appropriate method based on the type of chair, while paying attention to safety and stability.

Heightening Methods for Adjustable Office Chairs

  • Pneumatic Office Chairs: Locate the height adjustment lever beneath the seat. Leave the chair or slightly lift your body off the seat, pull the lever upward, and gently lift the seat cushion with both hands to utilize the elasticity of the pneumatic rod for elevation. If you are relatively lightweight, you can stand and directly lift the seat cushion upward with your hands while pulling the lever to assist in elevation.
  • Screw-Type Office Chairs: These chairs have a knob at the bottom of the gas rod or support rod. Rotate the knob counterclockwise, and the seat will gradually rise. After adjusting to the desired height, rotate the knob clockwise to tighten and secure it.

Heightening Methods for Non-Adjustable Chairs

  • Adding Heightening Foot Pads: Choose metal or plastic foot pads with anti-slip designs and place them directly under the chair legs to increase the height by 5-15 cm.
  • Chair Foot Heightening Accessories: Purchase dedicated chair heightening feet, usually made of metal or plastic, with screw holes for direct replacement or installation on the original chair feet.
  • Replacing with Longer Gas Rods: If the original gas rod is damaged or has insufficient travel, purchase a longer gas rod of the same model. Confirm the diameter and length of the gas rod, disassemble the base, and replace it. Tools are required, and safety precautions should be taken.
  • Seat Cushion Heightening: Place high-density foam pads, memory foam cushions, or latex pads with a thickness of 5-15 cm, and use anti-slip mats for fixation. Foldable mattresses or inflatable mattresses can be inflated to a relatively firm state and placed directly on the chair surface, suitable for temporary heightening.

Professional Tool Modifications

For wooden chairs, you can hire a carpenter to install extension legs under the chair feet and secure them with wood screws. For metal chair feet, welding can be used for heightening, but this should be done by professionals to prevent structural deformation.

Precautions

  • The load-bearing capacity of the heightening materials must meet standards to prevent breakage and falls.
  • When heightening the chair feet, ensure they are level, with a height error of no more than 1 mm for each foot.
  • When modifying an office chair, pay attention to safety certifications for the gas rod, such as SGS and TรœV. Do not privately modify unqualified products.
