Office Chair Explosion Risk

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chairs carry the risk of serious injury or even death due to the explosion of gas cylinders, but this is not a widespread phenomenon and can be mitigated through proper selection and use.

Accident Causes and Typical Cases

The main cause of office chair gas cylinder explosions is the use of compressed air instead of inert nitrogen in low-quality gas cylinders. Nitrogen is chemically stable and can effectively slow down the oxidation and rusting of the metal inner wall; whereas compressed air contains oxygen, which accelerates metal corrosion, leading to heat buildup and increased pressure inside the gas cylinder. When the pressure exceeds the limit that the metal tube wall can withstand, an explosion may occur.

Typical cases include:

  • The 2013 case of Ms. Liu: The gas cylinder of an online-purchased adjustable swivel chair burst, with a 3-centimeter-diameter steel column piercing her body. Dozens of metal fragments were removed from her abdomen and intestines.
  • The 2009 case of a teenager in Jiaozhou, Shandong: A 14-year-old boy was killed when the top rod of a gas-pressure chair pierced his body while he was adjusting it.

Quality Issues and Regulatory Status

According to a spot check by the State Administration for Market Regulation, 23.3% of office chairs failed inspection in 2020, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The problems mainly focused on two aspects:

  1. Substandard high/low-temperature resistance of gas cylinders: Under extreme temperatures, the metal tube wall becomes brittle, reducing its pressure resistance.
  2. Lack of explosion-proof steel plates: Explosion-proof steel plates can block fragments from flying during a gas cylinder explosion, but some low-quality products omit this component to reduce costs.

Preventive Measures and Purchase Recommendations

  1. Choose products from reputable manufacturers: Prioritize purchasing office chairs priced above 200 yuan to avoid low-quality, low-priced products.
  2. Inspect the quality of the gas cylinder:
    • Ensure there is no stuttering or abnormal noise during adjustment, indicating stable internal gas and good sealing.
    • Confirm that the surface of the gas cylinder is free from rust or scratches and avoid using damaged components.
  3. Verify the installation of explosion-proof steel plates:
    • An explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters should be installed between the seat cushion and the gas cylinder. You can lightly tap the bottom of the seat cushion to check for metal plate support.
    • If direct observation is not possible, request the merchant to provide product inspection reports or disassembly diagrams.

By following proper selection and regular inspections, the risk of office chair gas cylinder explosions can be significantly reduced, ensuring safety in use.
