Office Chair Difficult to Disassemble

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chairs are indeed relatively difficult to disassemble. It is not recommended to disassemble them unless necessary, and if disassembly is required, it is important to master the correct method and pay attention to safety.

Disassembling an office chair can be more challenging than assembling it, primarily because after prolonged use, the connection between the gas lift and the chair base becomes very tight, making the components more difficult to separate. There are two main areas where office chairs are particularly difficult to disassemble:

  • Separation of the seat and the gas lift: When disassembling the base, the first step is to separate the backrest. This requires locating the connecting components between the backrest and the seat, which could be screws or clips, and then operating according to the specific structure. Next, raise the gas lift to its maximum height to create a gap between the seat and the gas lift, facilitating subsequent disassembly. Then, firmly grasp the seat cushion with one hand and press the height adjustment lever with the other hand while gently shaking it several times. Through this repeated action, the connection between the seat and the gas lift will gradually loosen, allowing the seat to be removed.
  • Separation of the gas lift and the chair base: After successfully separating the base from the gas lift, proceed to separate the gas lift from the chair base. Invert the chair base so that the gas lift can more easily detach under the force of gravity. It is best to use a rubber mallet to strike the gas lift, as the rubber mallet has some elasticity and can reduce damage to the components while applying force. If a rubber mallet is not available, place a piece of wood underneath and use another suitable tool to strike it. The vibrations from the striking will loosen the connection between the gas lift and the chair base, allowing the gas lift to be removed.

When disassembling an office chair, safety must be a top priority. Due to the tight connections between components, significant force may be required during disassembly, so it is important to avoid losing balance or having components fly off and cause injury due to excessive force. Additionally, follow the correct steps for disassembly. If unsure how to proceed, refer to the office chair's instruction manual or seek assistance from a professional.
