Office Chair Deflation Methods
Admin October 11, 2026
There are several main methods for deflating office chairs, and it is necessary to choose the appropriate method according to different structures and operate with caution:

I. Cases with a deflation port on the pneumatic rod
- Locate the deflation port:
The deflation port is usually located at the bottom or side of the pneumatic rod and may be covered by a plastic cap. Use a screwdriver or a special tool to carefully pry open the cap to avoid damaging the surface of the pneumatic rod. - Deflate slowly:
Use a wrench or an adjustable wrench to gently unscrew the deflation port screw (some need to be rotated counterclockwise). At the same time, use the other hand to press down on the seat surface or the top of the pneumatic rod to control the gas release speed. If the air pressure drops too quickly, it may cause the chair structure to suddenly collapse, posing a safety hazard. - Monitor the air pressure:
Continuously observe the change in seat height during the deflation process. Stop the operation when you sit on it and feel that the support is moderate (without an obvious sinking feeling). For example, when working normally, having your thighs parallel to the ground and your feet naturally touching the ground is the appropriate height. - Seal the port:
After deflation is complete, wrap the deflation port screw with 2-3 turns of Teflon tape, then tighten the screw and cover it with a protective cap to ensure no gas leakage. You can apply soapy water to the joint and observe whether there are bubbles to verify the tightness.
II. Simple structures with a deflation button
Some office chairs have a red or black rubber button in the center or on the side of the chassis. Simply press the button with your finger and hold it for 3-5 seconds, and the gas will be slowly released through the internal valve. This method is simple to operate, but note the following:
- The button may be hidden under a dust cover, so you need to lift the cover first;
- After deflation, the seat height may not be precisely controllable, and multiple attempts at adjustment may be required.
III. Deflation of complex-structured lifting chairs (requiring professional tools)
- Remove the chassis:
Use a large cross-head screwdriver to unscrew the fixed screws at the four corners of the chassis. Remove the chassis to expose the connecting components of the pneumatic rod. - Take out the white clip:
Use needle-nose pliers to grip both sides of the clip and gently pull it out. Be careful to avoid the clip breaking and leaving residues. - Press down on the internal iron rod:
Use a fine star screwdriver to press against the protruding iron rod (with lubricating oil on the surface) at the top of the pneumatic rod, and press it down firmly to create a depression of about 1-2 millimeters, forming a temporary air valve. - Assist in deflation:
Insert a 4-centimeter-long iron needle (such as a nail) into the depression to fix it. Use a lifting wrench to press down on the top of the iron needle and slowly lift the wrench handle. At this time, you will hear a continuous hissing sound. The deflation speed should be controlled so that the seat does not drop more than 1 centimeter per second until there is no hissing sound.
Safety tips:
- Clear the items within 1 meter around you before operation and wear goggles and gloves;
- The high-pressure gas inside the pneumatic rod may reach 2-3 atmospheres. Do not pierce it directly with a sharp tool;
- If you encounter jamming or abnormal noise during operation, stop immediately and contact after-sales service.
