Office Chair Cylinder Explosion
The explosion of an office chair cylinder is a risk that exists but has a relatively low probability. However, its hazards are severe, and it requires high attention and preventive measures.

Causes of Explosion
- Gas Issues: Legitimate products use high-purity inert nitrogen, which is safe and stable. However, inferior products may use ordinary compressed air instead. Oxygen can oxidize and rust the metal inner wall, accumulating heat and turning the pressure rod into a high-pressure vessel. When the purity of nitrogen is insufficient, the pressure in the cylinder can surge under high temperatures, potentially causing an explosion.
- Material Issues: Poor-quality materials for the cylinder wall or defects in the manufacturing process can result in insufficient strength, leading to gas leaks or explosions.
- Sealing Issues: If the seal at the opening is not tight, escaping gas can trigger an explosion.
- Improper Use: Repeated lifting, sliding, or sudden sitting can cause uneven force on the pressure rod, increasing the risk of explosion due to long-term wear.
Hazards of Explosion
The compressed gas inside the pressure rod is under extremely high pressure, and the impact force during an explosion is enormous. For example, in 2013, Ms. Liu was pierced by a flying steel column, and dozens of metal fragments were removed from her body. A teenager in Shandong died from excessive blood loss due to the explosion of a pressure rod. Ms. Lou in Zhejiang had her chair seat blown through, with fragments penetrating ten centimeters into her body. A resident in Jiangxi was hit by a flying iron rod that struck the ceiling, causing multiple injuries to themselves. Simulation calculations show that an explosion can generate approximately 24 atmospheres of pressure, enough to penetrate six layers of density board and directly pierce human tissue.
Preventive Measures
- Purchase Legitimate Products: Choose lifting chairs produced by manufacturers with quality certifications, and avoid buying inferior products for the sake of cheapness.
- Standardize Usage Behavior: Avoid repeated lifting, sliding, or sudden sitting to reduce the risk of uneven force on the pressure rod.
- Pay Attention to the Usage Environment: Non-professionals should not disassemble the cylinder. Keep the chair away from high-temperature sources (such as stoves or ovens) to prevent gas expansion and potential dangers.
- Regular Inspection and Maintenance: After a period of use, have professionals inspect the cylinder for cracks, looseness, or other signs, and repair or replace it promptly if necessary.
