Office Chair Collapse Repair

Admin October 10, 2026

The repair of a collapsed office chair requires targeted methods based on the specific cause, mainly divided into two situations: cushion filler collapse and gas lift rod damage.

I. Repair of Cushion Filler Collapse

If you notice a local depression in the cushion while sitting quietly, it is usually due to the aging and loss of elasticity of the internal sponge or springs. In this case, the filler needs to be replaced, and you can refer to the repair method for sofa cushions:

  1. Dismantle the cushion: Turn the chair over, find the screws or buckles that secure the cushion, remove them, and then take off the cushion cover.
  2. Replace the filler: If the sponge has collapsed, measure the size of the original sponge and purchase a high-density sponge of the same specification for replacement. If the spring is broken, replace it with a spring of matching elasticity.
  3. Reassemble: Put the new filler into the cushion cover, secure it, and then put it back on the chair. Repair cost: Depending on the material of the filler and the model of the chair, the cost is roughly between 200 and 500 yuan per seat.

II. Repair of Gas Lift Rod Damage

If the seat slides down as a whole, or sinks on its own after adjusting the height, or leans when sitting on it, it may be due to the failure of the locking function of the gas lift rod, poor stability, or rust and jamming on the appearance. It can be repaired by the following two methods:

  1. Use a hose clamp:
    • Slide the plastic skirt to the bottom or top of the cylinder and adjust the chair to a suitable height (the seat is level with the knees). If the plastic skirt covers the cylinder, remove it first.
    • Wrap the hose clamp around the cylinder, improve the grip by wrapping rubber bands, tapes, or polishing the surface of the cylinder, tighten the clamp, and then test whether the chair is fixed.
  2. Use PVC pipes:
    • Measure the diameter and length of the cylinder, purchase a PVC pipe of the same or slightly larger diameter (a 1.5-inch pipe is suitable for most models), and saw the pipe to make it longitudinally split.
    • Push the split side onto the cylinder to fix it, ensuring that the pipe fits tightly against the cylinder. You can also try using a plastic shower ring as an alternative, but you need to bear the risk yourself.

III. Self-inspection Methods

  1. Observe the collapse position: If there is a local depression in the cushion while sitting quietly, it indicates a filler problem. If the seat slides down as a whole, it indicates a gas lift rod failure.
  2. Check the function of the gas lift rod: After adjusting the height, observe whether it sinks on its own, whether it leans when sitting on it, and check whether there is rust, jamming, or weak rebound on the appearance of the cylinder.

When repairing, choose the appropriate method according to the specific cause. If you are unable to handle it yourself, it is recommended to contact a professional repair person.
