Numbness in Feet from Sitting on an Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

Numbness in the feet from sitting on an office chair is mainly related to unreasonable chair design, obstructed blood circulation, and nerve compression. It can be alleviated and prevented by adjusting the chair height, getting up and moving regularly, using auxiliary items, and seeking medical attention promptly.

Unreasonable chair design is one of the common causes. Some office chairs are designed with defects to cut costs. For example, when stretching the legs and reclining halfway, the waist is left hanging, the neck is tilted, and the legs are compressed by the armrests, resulting in an incorrect body posture. This poor posture can compress nerves or affect blood circulation, leading to numbness in the feet.

Obstructed blood circulation is also an important factor. If the height of the office chair is not adjusted for a long time and the feet are left hanging, the edge of the seat will tightly press against the blood vessels at the top of the thighs, obstructing blood circulation in the lower limbs. Blood cannot flow back smoothly and accumulates in the lower limbs. At this time, the oxygen supply to the lower limbs is insufficient, and lactic acid builds up, which can easily cause numbness in the feet.

Poor posture during prolonged sitting can also compress nerves and cause numbness in the feet. When maintaining the same posture for a long time, the nerves are continuously compressed, affecting their normal function and resulting in symptoms of numbness in the feet.

To address these issues, the following relief and prevention measures can be taken.

  • Adjust the chair height: After sitting down, the feet should be able to rest flat on the ground, with the thighs and lower legs forming a 90-degree angle and the knee position slightly lower than the hips. This is the most appropriate chair height. There are corresponding references for different heights. For those between 160 and 165 cm, choose a seat height of about 40 cm; for those between 165 and 170 cm, choose 42 cm; and for those above 170 cm, choose 45 cm. If the company's chair cannot be adjusted in height, a footrest can be purchased.
  • Get up and move regularly: Stand up for 2 minutes every 40 minutes of sitting, tiptoe, and rotate the ankles a few times to promote blood circulation in the lower limbs and relieve symptoms of numbness in the feet.
  • Use auxiliary items: Office workers can bring their own U-shaped pillows, lumbar pads, etc., to improve their sitting posture, reduce body pressure, and avoid compressing nerves and blood vessels.
  • Seek medical attention promptly: If frequent numbness and pain in the legs occur and cannot be relieved after several days of rest, one should promptly go to the orthopedics or vascular surgery department for examination to rule out the presence of other diseases.
