Why the Office Chair Cannot Recline

Admin October 11, 2026

There may be various reasons why an office chair cannot recline. Here are specific analyses and solutions:

1. Chair design does not allow reclining Some office chairs are designed to maintain an upright sitting posture or to meet specific functional requirements (such as fixed angles for conference chairs or gaming chairs) and are not equipped with a reclining function. Solution: Before purchasing, check the product description or consult the merchant to confirm whether the chair supports reclining. If you have already bought it, consider replacing it with a model that has a reclining function.

2. Locking mechanism is activated Many office chairs are equipped with safety locking devices that fix the tilt angle via switches or buttons to prevent accidental tipping. Solution: Check the locking switch on the side, bottom, or armrest of the chair to ensure it is in the โ€œunlockedโ€ position (usually marked as โ€œOPENโ€ or with an arrow pointing backward). If the locking device is stuck, try gently pushing the backrest while operating the switch, or spray a small amount of lubricant to assist in unlocking.

3. Damage or malfunction Key components (such as the gas lift, handbrake, seals, and pivot springs) may be damaged due to long-term use, rough handling, or quality issues. Solution:

  • Gas lift failure: Check if the chair's height adjustment function is working properly. If the adjustment is sluggish or the chair sinks, the gas lift may be leaking and needs to be replaced by contacting after-sales service.
  • Handbrake damage: Handbrake failure is common in gaming chairs, causing the backrest to lock. Remove the base to check if the handbrake linkage is broken and replace the corresponding parts.
  • Pivot spring breakage: If the backrest has weak rebound, the spring may be fatigued or broken. Disassemble the bottom pivot area of the backrest to replace the spring.

4. Improper operation Some chairs adjust the tilt angle via a control lever under the seat. Incorrect operation may cause it to lock. Solution:

  • Unlocking: Pull the control lever fully out (usually downward or backward) and hold it for 3-5 seconds. The backrest should rebound to the upright position under spring action.
  • Relocking: After the backrest is reset, push the control lever back into the fixing hole until you hear a โ€œclickโ€ to confirm the angle is locked.
  • Assisted reset: If the backrest does not rebound, gently push the backrest forward with your hand while pulling out the control lever to feel if the reset resistance is uniform and rule out mechanical jamming.

5. Foreign object obstruction The pivot area of the backrest and the gaps in the base can easily get clogged with clothing fibers, data cables, food crumbs, etc. Solution:

  • Clean the pivot area: Turn the chair upside down and check for tangled objects at the bottom pivot of the backrest. Remove them with tweezers or needle-nose pliers.
  • Check the base gaps: Use a soft-bristled brush or compressed air to clean dust and foreign objects from the joint between the seat and the base to ensure smooth movement of the moving parts.

If none of the above methods work, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer's after-sales service or a professional repair person to avoid further damage caused by self-disassembly.
