Removal and Prevention of Black Marks on Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

The removal of black marks on office chairs can be achieved through various methods, while prevention requires attention to daily usage habits and protective measures.

Removal Methods

  1. Toothpaste Wiping Method
For scratches or stains on fabric surfaces, apply a small amount of toothpaste to the black mark and wipe repeatedly with a clean towel. The tiny particles in toothpaste have an abrasive effect, removing shallow stains, but be careful not to damage the fabric fibers with excessive force.

  2. Wood Slicing and Wax Covering
If the black mark is on the surface of a wooden office chair, use a wooden slice (such as a popsicle stick) to gently sand the scratch along the grain direction. After removing the oxidized layer, apply a layer of wax similar in color to the chair surface and wipe it smooth with a soft cloth. This method is suitable for minor scratches and can restore the wooden luster.

  3. Touch-up Pen Repair
For shallow scratches, choose a touch-up pen that matches the color of the chair's paint surface and apply it evenly along the scratch direction. After drying, lightly sand it with fine sandpaper until smooth. This method is simple to operate, but ensure color matching to avoid obvious color differences.

  4. Eraser Cleaning Method
If the black mark is shallow pencil lead or rubber friction marks, use a sand-free eraser (such as a 4B eraser) to wipe in one direction along the marks, avoiding back-and-forth friction that could spread the stains. This method is suitable for smooth surfaces, such as plastic or painted surfaces.

  5. Baking Soda Paste Cleaning
Mix baking soda with water in a 3:1 ratio to form a paste, apply it to the black mark, and let it sit for 10 minutes. After the stain decomposes, wipe it with a soft cloth. Baking soda is weakly alkaline and can neutralize acidic stains, suitable for stubborn black marks on fabric or plastic surfaces.

  6. Professional Restoration Services
If the black mark is deep or involves material damage (such as leather cracking or wooden paint peeling), it is recommended to contact a professional housekeeping company or repair personnel to use professional tools and materials for restoration, avoiding further damage from self-handling.

Prevention Measures

  1. Add Protective Pads
Place transparent adhesive pads or carpets in the contact area between the chair and the floor to reduce black marks caused by direct friction. For wheeled office chairs, choose casters with brake functions to avoid scratching the floor when sliding.

  2. Control Moving Force
Avoid pushing or pulling the office chair forcefully when moving it, especially on hard floors (such as tiles or marble). Lift the chair and place it gently to reduce the friction between the wheels and the floor.

  3. Regular Floor Maintenance
Regularly maintain the floor material, such as spraying a brightener on wooden floors to keep them smooth, and wiping tile floors with a neutral cleaner to reduce stain adhesion.

  4. Avoid Contact with Chemical Solvents
Solid wood or painted office chairs should avoid cleaning with solvents such as alcohol or gasoline to prevent corrosion of the paint surface, leading to discoloration or black marks. It is recommended to use dedicated furniture care agents for cleaning.
