Office Chair Base Separation
Admin October 11, 2026
Separating the base of an office chair requires choosing the appropriate method based on the base type and connection method. The specific steps are as follows:

I. General Disassembly Steps
Preparation
- Tool Preparation: Rubber mallet (or an iron hammer wrapped in thick cloth), gloves, screwdriver (required for some models), loosening agent (such as WD-40 for rust treatment), soft pad or old carpet.
- Environment Setup: Invert the chair onto a soft pad in an open, flat area, ensuring it is stable and does not slide to avoid damaging the floor or chair wheels.
Core Operations
- Locate Connection Points: Observe the center of the base and find the metal collar (steel ring) connected to the gas lift rod; this is the key stress point.
- Loosen by Tapping: Use a rubber mallet to continuously tap along the circumference of the metal collar, loosening the connection that has become 'stuck' due to long-term compression through vibration. Be careful not to tap directly on the gas lift rod to prevent damage to its internal precision structure.
- Attempt Separation: After tapping, hold the five-star base with both hands, twist it left and right, and pull it upwards. If it does not separate, repeat the tapping step until the connection loosens.
- Treat Rust: If the connection is severely rusted, spray the loosening agent and let it soak for 10-15 minutes. After the rust layer softens, tap again to improve separation efficiency.
II. Handling Special Cases
Seat Disassembly Required First
- If the top of the gas lift rod is screwed onto the seat chassis, use a screwdriver to remove the screws first, separate the seat from the gas lift rod, and then handle the connection between the base and the gas lift rod.
Base Stuck or Rusted
- Continuous Tapping with Twisting: Tap the edge of the base from multiple angles, twist it left and right in the gaps, and continuously pull it upwards, using the lever principle to break the stuck state.
- Smart Twisting Method: Use a pipe wrench or locking pliers to grip the exposed iron rod part of the gas lift rod (wrap it with a protective layer to avoid scratches), and gently twist it left and right to break the rusted structure.
- Segmented Disassembly Strategy: If the above methods are ineffective, try other separation methods. For example, for a sliding-design base, lift the chair legs upwards to separate them from the base and remove them along the slide rails.
III. Disassembly of Other Base Types
- Four-Leg Structure: Flip the chair over, use a screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screws at the bottom of the chair legs, and directly separate the chair legs from the base.
- Sliding Design: Lift the chair legs upwards to detach them from the base and remove them along the preset slide rails without the need for complex tools.
Safety Tips: Wear gloves throughout the operation to avoid cuts; check if the chair wheels are deformed or have burrs to prevent scratching the floor; if unsure about the operation steps or encountering difficulties, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling to ensure safety.
