Office Chair Base Removal
The methods for removing the base of an office chair mainly include screw-fixed type, direct-insertion type, and special removal methods without a rubber mallet, as detailed below:

Screw-Fixed Type Removal
If there are exposed screw holes at the connection between the chair legs and the base, a hex wrench (standard tool) is typically used to rotate counterclockwise and loosen the screws. For structures using cross or flat-head screws, a corresponding screwdriver should be selected for removal. In case of screw stripping, needle-nose pliers can be used to assist in holding the screw steady for smooth removal. This type of structure is commonly found in mid-to-high-end gaming chairs or adjustable office chairs, which prioritize stability and adjustability, making screw-fixing a convenient method for installation and removal.
Direct-Insertion Type Removal
This method is more commonly seen in ordinary office chairs, where the metal rod of the chair legs is directly inserted into the holes of the five-star base. During removal, grasp the root of the chair legs and continuously shake them slightly left and right while pulling upwards, accompanied by gentle tapping with a rubber mallet at the connection point to facilitate easier separation of the chair legs from the base. For models with anti-disengagement snap rings at the metal interfaces, needle-nose pliers are needed to grip the protruding end of the snap ring for removal before the chair legs can be successfully detached. The load-bearing limit of an ordinary nylon five-star base is approximately 120kg, while that of a reinforced metal chair leg can reach up to 200kg. Some brands of chair legs feature a quick-release interface design, allowing for separation by simply pressing the unlock button at the bottom, making operation more convenient.
Removal Without a Rubber Mallet
- Loosen the base screws: Check if there are base screws on the computer chair. If so, use a screwdriver to rotate these screws counterclockwise until they are completely loosened, separating the upper and lower parts of the chair for subsequent operations. If the computer chair has no base screws, skip this step.
- Lift the chair legs and tap: Lift the computer chair so that the chair legs are completely off the ground. In the absence of a rubber mallet, other hard objects (such as wooden blocks or bricks) can be used as substitutes. Place a book or thick cloth at the tapping position and tap the chair legs from above with moderate and even force until the adhesive joint between the chair legs and the base loosens.
- Remove the chair legs and invert the chair: When the connection between the chair legs and the base starts to loosen, attempt to remove the chair legs. Then, invert the chair, hold the pneumatic rod part, and continue tapping the base with a hard object, maintaining a certain rhythm and force until the base completely detaches.
Additionally, if the components are tightly stuck after prolonged use and alternative objects are used for tapping without professional tools, extra caution should be exercised to avoid damaging other parts. If forced methods still fail to achieve removal, it is advisable to seek the assistance of professional repair personnel.
