Office Chair Backrest Too Far Back

Admin October 12, 2026

If the backrest of an office chair is too far back, it can usually be adjusted back using the following methods:

Check the Adjustment Buttons or Handles

Many office chairs are designed with adjustment buttons or handles on the sides or near the backrest to facilitate easy adjustment of the backrest angle. These devices are key components for controlling the backrest angle. When you find that the backrest is too far back, locate these adjustment buttons or handles and press or pull them. During the operation, the angle of the backrest will start to change, and you can then push the backrest forward with your hands to gradually return it to a position that feels comfortable for you. This adjustment method is relatively intuitive and simple to operate, making it one of the more common adjustment techniques.

Rotate the Knob

Some office chairs rely on rotating a knob on the backrest for adjustment. This knob is usually located in a conspicuous position on the side or bottom of the backrest. When you turn this knob, the backrest will change its angle accordingly. While turning the knob, you can gently push the backrest to find a comfortable angle based on your needs. This adjustment method requires some patience and attention to detail, as you need to continuously experiment with turning the knob and pushing the backrest to find the most suitable angle for yourself.

Pneumatic Rod Adjustment

Some office chairs use a pneumatic rod to adjust the angle of the backrest. A pneumatic rod is a device that can achieve seat lifting and backrest angle adjustment through changes in air pressure. You can find the pneumatic rod adjustment device at the bottom or side of the chair and then operate it according to the instructions in the manual. By controlling the lifting and lowering of the pneumatic rod, you can change the angle of the backrest and thus return it to a normal position. However, when using the pneumatic rod for adjustment, be mindful of the operating force to avoid damaging the pneumatic rod or causing the chair to malfunction due to excessive force.

Lever Adjustment System

For office chairs that use a lever system for reclining angle adjustment, the adjustment method is slightly different. You first need to locate the adjustment lever, which is usually located under the seat, near the right or left side. After finding the lever, gently pull it up or push it down to release the locking mechanism. At this point, sit up straight slightly forward, and the backrest may rebound under the action of the spring. If you need to lock the backrest at a certain angle, after adjusting to the desired angle, pull up or push down the lever again to lock the position.
