Office Chair Backrest Tilt

Admin October 09, 2026

Adjusting the tilt of an office chair backrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on the chair type, and troubleshooting should be carried out according to specific manifestations. Scientific adjustment can enhance comfort and avoid health risks.

I. Tilt Adjustment Methods

  1. Lever-Type Adjustment: A lever is usually located beneath the seat. Pull or push it, then slowly lean back, and the backrest angle will change accordingly. Release the lever to lock the current angle. This method is suitable for most basic office chairs. Maintain body balance during operation to avoid sudden force causing loss of control.
  2. Knob-Type Adjustment: Rotate the knob on the side or back of the chair to control the tightness of the gas spring. Rotating clockwise increases the resistance to leaning back, while rotating counterclockwise decreases it. Some knobs need to be rotated to a specific position to lock the angle. Multiple attempts may be required during adjustment to find the resistance value suitable for your own strength.
  3. Electric Adjustment: High-end office chairs are equipped with electric control panels or buttons, allowing precise setting of the backrest angle (e.g., in increments of 5ยฐ). After pressing the corresponding button, the backrest will automatically adjust to the target angle and lock when the button is released. For such chairs, regularly check the power connection and motor status to ensure normal functionality.
  4. Angle Locking: After adjusting the angle, operate the adjustment device (such as pushing back the lever or tightening the knob) to fix the backrest. If sliding still occurs after locking, it may be due to wear of the adjustment device, and replacement parts are needed.

II. Tilt Troubleshooting and Repair

  1. Damaged Gas Spring: If the chair leans to one side or sags, it may be due to a loose connection or internal seal failure of the gas spring. Remove the chair legs, gently tap the base with a rubber mallet to detach it, and replace it with a gas spring of the same specification. Ensure that the gas spring is vertically aligned with the base and chair legs during installation to avoid misalignment.
  2. Base Fault: A cracked, aged base or loose connection of the five-star base can cause the chair to wobble. Check the base for cracks or deformation, and replace the entire base if necessary. Tighten the connecting screws between the five-star base and the base to ensure structural stability.
  3. Loose Screws: Loose screws on the armrests, base, or backrest can cause displacement. Use a screwdriver to tighten all visible screws one by one. If the screw holes are worn, fill them with toothpicks dipped in white glue, and reinstall the screws after drying to enhance the fixing effect.
  4. Floor or Chair Leg Issues: An uneven floor or worn chair legs can cause the chair to tilt. Use rubber pads to elevate the short legs or sand the long legs to adjust the height. Alternatively, install adjustable feet and rotate them to adjust the levelness.
  5. Damaged Casters: If the chair leans to one side, check if the casters are bent or broken. Replace the entire set of matching casters. Apply lubricant to the wheel axles during installation, and gently tap the casters with a rubber mallet until they are fully embedded to ensure smooth rotation.

III. Scientific Adjustment Recommendations

  • Focused Work: Adjust the backrest angle to 90ยฐ-100ยฐ, maintain a slight forward lean of the body to reduce waist pressure.
  • Reading/Thinking: Adjust the angle to 100ยฐ-110ยฐ to relax the back muscles and enhance concentration.
  • Lunch Break: Adjust the angle to 110ยฐ-130ยฐ, use a U-shaped pillow to support the neck and a lumbar support to fill the gap at the waist to avoid suspension.
  • Avoid Incorrect Adjustment: Excessive backward tilt (beyond 130ยฐ) may cause excessive cervical spine extension and breathing obstruction, and long-term use can easily lead to strain.

Before adjustment, ensure that the floor is level. Avoid rapid force or excessive tilt during operation. If the problem cannot be resolved, it is recommended to contact a professional maintenance technician for inspection and repair.
