Office Chair Backrest Repair

Admin October 16, 2026

Office chair backrest repair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the type of damage. Common situations and repair steps are as follows:

1. Breakage at the backrest connection

This type of damage is often caused by metal fatigue or external impact, and the repair needs to take into account both structural strength and stability.

  1. Material Preparation: One 92mm 304 stainless steel connecting plate, a set of M5 stainless steel flat-head screws, 35mm stainless steel zip ties, AB glue or epoxy adhesive.
  2. Operation Steps:
    • Glue Bonding: Mix AB glue in a 50:50 ratio or use epoxy adhesive, apply it evenly to the broken surface, and let it sit for 10 minutes for the adhesive to cure.
    • Positioning and Drilling: Cover the broken area with the connecting plate, mark two hole positions on each side (a total of 4 holes) with a marker pen, and drill holes using a lithium-ion drill or soldering iron.
    • Fixing and Reinforcing: Tighten the screws to fix the connecting plate. If there is a deviation in the hole position on the other side, temporarily tighten it with a stainless steel zip tie and use pliers to pull it tight until there is no looseness.
    • Side Reinforcement: Wrap stainless steel zip ties around the side of the broken area to further disperse the pressure.
    • Appearance Treatment: After the repair is completed, cover the repaired area with carbon fiber stickers to enhance the aesthetics.

2. Backrest cushion detachment (seat cushion nut falls off)

This problem is usually caused by the failure of the nut fixation and needs to be solved by enlarging the hole diameter and re-fixing.

  1. Material Preparation: No. 6 threaded posts, zip ties, hole saws, glue.
  2. Operation Steps:
    • Enlarge the Hole Diameter: Use a hole saw to enlarge the hole where the nut has fallen off, and clean up any residual adhesive or impurities.
    • Fix the Nut: Screw the No. 6 threaded post into the hole, cut the zip tie and insert it into the four teeth of the threaded post, ensuring that the nut height is flush with the inner surface of the backrest.
    • Glue Reinforcement: While the glue is still wet, unscrew the threaded post to expel the internal air and prevent the threaded post from being unable to rotate after the adhesive cures; use a screwdriver to repeatedly turn the threaded post up and down to prevent the nut from rotating with it.

3. Breakage of the connection between the plastic backrest base and the backrest

Plastic breakage requires repair through hole position replication, adhesive filling, and secondary reinforcement.

  1. Material Preparation: Electric drill, correction fluid, foam board, gasoline, baking soda, spray paint, rivets, 502 glue, graphite rod powder, baking soda, fine sandpaper.
  2. Operation Steps:
    • Hole Position Replication: Drill a row of small holes on the broken surface, cover the surface with correction fluid, combine the two plastic pieces and replicate the hole positions on the other side to ensure that the two sets of hole positions are symmetrical.
    • Homemade Adhesive: Cut the foam board into small pieces and dissolve it in gasoline, add baking soda to thicken it, and then mix it with spray paint to adjust the color to a black sesame paste-like consistency.
    • Initial Fixing: Dip the rivets in the adhesive and insert them into the small holes, apply the adhesive and align the two plastic pieces according to the hole positions.
    • Secondary Reinforcement: Mix graphite rod powder with baking soda, seal three sides of the broken surface with tape, fill the powder from the top and drip in 502 glue. After curing, repeat the operation on the other sides.
    • Surface Treatment: Sand the repaired area with fine sandpaper until it is smooth, and repaint it if necessary to restore the appearance.
