Office Chair Backrest Repair

Admin October 12, 2026

The repair of an office chair backrest can be quickly resolved in three steps: checking screws, adjusting the support device, and replacing parts. Here are the specific methods:

1. Checking Screws

The most common cause of a loose backrest is loose screws. Steps:

  1. Straighten the chair back and hold the backrest with both hands, shaking it left and right. If there is a creaking sound or noticeable displacement, check the screws first.
  2. Locate the cross or hexagonal screws at the connection between the backrest and the base, as well as the bottom of the armrests. Tighten them clockwise with a screwdriver or wrench.
  3. If the screw hole is stripped (i.e., the threads are worn and cannot hold the screw), fill it with fine wire or toothpicks to increase friction. Some screws may be covered by plastic caps; gently pry them open, repair them, and then snap them back into place.
Note: Apply even pressure when tightening screws to avoid over-tightening and breaking the threads.

2. Adjusting the Support Device

If the backrest is still unstable after tightening the screws, the support device may have failed. Steps:

  1. Check the circular knob at the bottom of the chair (labeled 'Tilt Tension') and rotate it counterclockwise to increase support.
  2. If adjustment is ineffective, the internal spring assembly may need to be replaced. If the hydraulic system fails and the backrest cannot stand upright, lay the chair on its side and inspect the drive components.
  3. If the fixed screw (10*1 non-standard screw) for the hydraulic rod pivot is damaged, it can be replaced with a standard size 10 screw:
    • Use a tap to create new threads or directly screw it in with a wrench.
    • The screw length should be 30 mm (the original is shorter). When installing, avoid interfering with the movement of the hydraulic rod; adjust with washers if necessary.
    • Screw a nut onto the bolt to enhance fixation.

3. Replacing Parts

If the backrest sinks as a whole or lacks rebound, the issue is likely with the gas lift or tilt adjustment mechanism. Steps:

  1. Slowly raise and lower the chair to test stability. If the height cannot be fixed or it slides down automatically, replace the gas lift (the model is marked on the side of the rod).
    • To disassemble, invert the chair and gently tap the base with a rubber mallet to detach it from the clips. Be careful to avoid sudden ejection of the gas rod.
  2. If the seat nut falls off, causing the backrest cushion to detach, use a hole saw to enlarge the hole diameter. After cleaning the original nut:
    • Screw in a size 6 threaded post and use a zip tie (with teeth) to engage with the teeth of the post to adjust the nut position.
    • Remove the threaded post to fix the nut when the glue is almost dry. Before it dries completely, use a screwdriver to twist it up and down to prevent adhesion. Finally, clean the surrounding area.

Temporary Emergency Solution: If immediate repair is not possible, use a pillow or rolled-up towel to pad the lumbar support area for comfort, or use a nylon zip tie to temporarily secure the backrest to the base (avoid long-term use to prevent structural deformation).
