Office Chair Backrest Removal
Admin October 09, 2026
The method for removing the backrest of an office chair depends on the structural type. Here are the common types and steps:

I. Snap-Button Backrest (Simple Office Chairs)
- Observe the Connection Structure: Check if there are plastic snap buttons at the connection between the backrest and the seat, usually located on both sides at the bottom of the backrest or below the back. Some snap buttons may be covered by soft plastic and require careful touch to confirm.
- Removal Operation:
- Turn the chair upside down and place it on a soft surface (such as a carpet or foam pad) to avoid scratching the seat or the floor.
- Use your hand or a flat-head screwdriver to press the elastic part of the snap button (such as a protrusion or groove) while pulling the backrest outward. Some snap buttons need to be lifted up first and then pulled outward. Adjust the force according to the actual structure.
- If the snap button is too tight, wrap a thin cloth around the tip of the screwdriver to prevent the plastic part from breaking. Avoid pulling with brute force to prevent damage to the snap button or the chair frame.
II. Screw-Fixed Backrest (Solid Wood/Metal Frame or High-End Executive Chairs)
- Locate the Screws: Check the positions of the screws connecting the backrest and the seat, usually hidden under plastic covers at the bottom of the seat or inside the backrest. Some models may have screws covered by decorative strips, which need to be pried open first.
- Removal Steps:
- Select the appropriate screwdriver according to the screw type (cross or hexagonal) and unscrew all the fixing screws. Keep small parts such as washers and springs to avoid loss.
- After the screws are completely loosened, hold both sides of the backrest with your hands and lift it vertically to separate it. If the backrest and the chair frame have a slot design, gently shake the backrest to make it detach from the slot.
- Some models need to tilt the seat first (such as forward by 45ยฐ) and then separate the backrest. Refer to the specific structure to adjust the operation sequence.
III. Gas Cylinder-Connected Backrest (Some Ergonomic Chairs)
- Confirm the Position of the Gas Cylinder: The backrest is connected to the seat base through a gas cylinder, and some gas cylinders have an adjustment knob (usually located at the bottom or side of the gas cylinder).
- Unlocking Operation:
- Adjust the backrest to the vertical position and turn the adjustment knob to the "unlocked" state (some knobs need to be rotated clockwise or counterclockwise multiple times).
- Hold both sides of the backrest with your hands and pull it upward with force to separate the part connected to the gas cylinder base. If the gas cylinder is wrapped by a base guard, remove the guard first (usually fixed with screws).
- If the gas cylinder is rusty and makes removal difficult, spray a small amount of rust remover (such as WD-40) onto the connection and wait for 5-10 minutes before attempting to pull it out.
General Precautions
- Tool Preparation: A flat-head screwdriver may be required for snap-button types; corresponding screwdrivers are needed for screw-fixed types; rust remover may be required for gas cylinder types (if the screws are rusty).
- Safety Protection: Keep children away during removal to avoid injury from parts. For electrically adjustable seats, cut off the power first to prevent accidental triggering and accidents.
- Part Management: Store small parts such as screws and washers separately. It is recommended to use small containers (such as medicine boxes) to package and label them according to their positions.
- Reference Instructions: For branded office chairs, it is recommended to refer to the "Removal Guide" in the product manual first. Some models may have special structures (such as hidden screws or reverse snap buttons).
