Office Chair Backrest Reclining Mechanism Diagram
The reclining mechanism of an office chair backrest primarily relies on the collaborative work of the reclining mechanism and the damping/locking device, achieving the dispersion of human body pressure and the maintenance of the natural curvature of the spine through mechanical structures.

I. Classification and Implementation Methods of Reclining Mechanisms
Back-Reclining Mechanism
The backrest reclines independently while the seat remains horizontal. There are two implementation methods: one is to provide deformation space through elastic steel plates (such as spring steel sheets) at the connection of the backrest, and the other is to utilize the flexibility of the backrest material itself (such as highly elastic mesh fabric or engineering plastics) to achieve bending. This type of design is common in ordinary office chairs and is suitable for scenarios where frequent adjustment of sitting posture is required.Seat-Reclining Mechanism
The seat and the backrest are rigidly connected. When reclining, the whole moves like a seesaw, and the angle between the two remains unchanged. According to the position of the force application point, it can be divided into two types:
- Center-mounted type: The force application point is in the middle of the seat. When reclining, the buttocks sink and the knees rise, suitable for short-term rest;
- Front-mounted type: The force application point is close to the front end of the seat. When reclining, the buttocks sink but the knees basically do not rise, reducing the pressure on the legs.
- Synchronous Reclining Mechanism
The seat and the backrest are synchronously linked in a specific proportion (usually the upward tilt angle of the seat is smaller than the backward tilt angle of the backrest). When the user reclines backward, the seat cushion slightly rises to maintain stability of the center of gravity, and the pressure on the knees is distributed more evenly. This type of design conforms to the body state when the user reclines backward and is common in high-end ergonomic chairs, providing dynamic fitting support.
II. Functions of Adjustment and Locking Devices
Damping and Locking Devices
The damping force is adjusted to achieve slow rebound of the backrest, avoiding sudden drops; the multi-position locking function allows the user to fix the backrest at a specific angle (such as 100ยฐ-110ยฐ for work or 135ยฐ for rest); the adaptive rebound technology can automatically adjust the rebound force according to the user's weight, improving comfort of use.Adjustment Methods
- Pneumatic rod adjustment type: The backrest angle is controlled by the expansion and contraction of the pneumatic rod, which is convenient to operate but has relatively low precision;
- Knob adjustment type: Rotate the knob to gradually adjust the damping force or the locking angle, suitable for fine adjustment needs;
- Handle adjustment type: Pull the handle to unlock the backrest, and it will be automatically locked after release, which is common in mid-to-high-end products.
III. Core of Ergonomic Design
The ideal sitting posture should follow the "golden 110ยฐ sitting angle" (the angle between the torso and the thighs is about 110ยฐ), at which time the lumbar spine pressure can be reduced by about 40%. Through scientific design, the reclining mechanism enables the backrest to be stably adjusted within the range of 100ยฐ-110ยฐ (work mode) to 135ยฐ-150ยฐ (rest mode). Combined with components such as headrests and lumbar supports, it achieves comprehensive support from the cervical spine to the coccyx.
