Methods for Making Office Chair Backrests
Admin October 17, 2026
The methods for making office chair backrests vary depending on the type. Here are some common types and their making methods:

Origami-style Backrest Chairs
- Simple Handmade Backrest Chair: Prepare a square piece of paper. First, fold the top and bottom edges to align. Then, fold each of the four corners to align with the endpoints of the midline. After shaping it into a specific form, unfold the corners along the creases. Do the same on the left side and press it flat downward. Finally, press the whole thing along the creases. After some adjustments, a three-dimensional simple chair is ready. This origami backrest chair is suitable for children's handicrafts and can exercise their hands-on abilities, but it cannot be actually used in office settings.
- Simple Three-Dimensional Backrest Chair: Also prepare a square piece of paper. After folding the top and bottom edges to align, fold it towards the midline and press out the creases. Then, open the whole thing up. Turn it over and fold the two corners inward along the creases by one unit. Next, fold the whole thing downward along the midline to align. Press the crease to the right of the crease intersection. Gather it upward along the three creases. Fold the top edge with the double-colored side downward and tuck the corner into the gap to lock it. Finally, make overall adjustments, and a three-dimensional and interesting backrest chair is completed. This origami method is relatively complex, but the chair folded in this way has a stronger three-dimensional sense and is more aesthetically pleasing.
Adjustable Backrest Office Chairs
- Pneumatic Rod Adjustment Type: The adjustment handle is usually located under the seat or on the right-hand side. Sit on the chair, lean your body against the backrest, reach under the seat with one hand to find the adjustment handle, pull the handle upward, and at the same time, lean your back slightly backward with a little force. The backrest will slowly recline with the force of your body. When you reach a comfortable angle, release the handle to fix the position. To return to an upright position, pull the handle again, lean your back slightly forward with a little force to sit up straight, and the chair back will automatically bounce back.
- Knob Adjustment Type: The knob is usually on the side or back of the chair back. Find the rotating knob on the side or back of the chair back. Rotate the knob clockwise, and the backrest will gradually tighten, with increased resistance to reclining and a smaller angle. Rotating it counterclockwise has the opposite effect; the backrest becomes looser, making it easier to recline with a larger angle range. It is recommended to rotate and test-sit at the same time to find a suitable damping force.
- Lever Adjustment Type: The lever is mostly located under the seat near the left or right side, and some models are under the right armrest. Gently pull up or push the lever to release the locked state of the backrest. Lean your body backward, adjust it to a suitable reclining angle, and release the lever. The backrest will then be locked. Some high-end models' levers also support multi-gear adjustment, with each pull switching to a different gear.
Wooden Folding Backrest Chairs
Drive a nail into the middle of two triangular wooden boards to form an openable and closable X-shaped structure. Make two such structures and place them parallel to each other to form the basic frame of a wooden folding backrest chair. This type of chair has the characteristic of being foldable, which is convenient for storage and carrying.
