Office Chair Backrest Loosening
Loosening of the office chair backrest can be resolved by identifying the cause and implementing targeted repairs. Common causes include loosening of the adjustment rod screws, failure of the spring retention, excessive clearance in the gas lift rod, and dropping of the cushion nut. Specific repair methods are as follows:

Identify the specific location of the looseness: First, test the degree of wobble when the chair back leans backward. If there is a clicking sound, it is often due to the adjustment rod screws not being tightened properly. If the chair back has weak rebound, the spring or gas lift rod may be aging. Use a mobile phone flashlight to observe whether there is a noticeable gap at the connection below the chair back to initially determine the location of the looseness.
Targeted repair solutions:
- Loosening of the adjustment rod screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise. After exposing the metal fixing frame, use a wrench to tighten the 6 - 8 fixing screws one by one (you can operate symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force), ensuring that the stability of the chair back is improved after the screws are tightened.
- Failure of the spring retention: Locate the spring bolt at the bottom of the chair back and use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, measure the original spring length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3 - 5mm (costing about 5 - 15 yuan) for replacement.
- Excessive clearance in the gas lift rod: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, find the adjustment knob of the gas lift rod (usually a black plastic part), and rotate it counterclockwise to increase the support force. It is recommended to test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ during adjustment until the rebound force of the chair back is appropriate.
- Dropping of the cushion nut: If the backrest is loose due to the dropping of the nut on the cushion, use a hole opener to enlarge the hole, clean the original nut, find a No. 6 threaded rod and screw it in, use a four-toothed cable tie to insert it into the teeth, cut it off and insert it into the hole to make the nut height flush with the inside, and screw out the threaded rod to fix the nut when the glue is almost dry.
Emergency reinforcement tips: When there are no professional tools, temporary solutions can be used. Cut a bicycle inner tube into a 3cm-wide tape and wrap it around the joint between the chair back and the base to increase friction. Or use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift rod to limit the amplitude of the swing. These operations can maintain stability for 3 - 7 days of use.
Handling of other situations: If the internal gas lift rod, gear set, or spring are worn due to long-term stress, resulting in weak rebound or unstable fixation, contact the manufacturer to replace the parts. If the plastic buckles, metal brackets, and other components inside the backrest are deformed due to long-term pressure, try adjusting the knob at the back of the chair (if it has a locking function) for reinforcement.
