Office Chair Backrest Illustration

The adjustment methods and design points of office chair backrests are as follows:

Adjustment Methods
The reclining adjustment of an office chair is essentially an ergonomic mechanism with damping control. Common adjustment methods include lever-type, knob-type, and gas-lift-type adjustments.
- Lever-type adjustment: Locate the long lever beneath the front of the seat or on the right side of the chair. First, release the lock (if present), then pull up or lift the adjustment lever while relaxing your body and leaning back. The backrest will tilt according to your body's force. Once you reach a comfortable angle, release the lever to secure it. To return to an upright position, pull the lever again and sit forward.
- Knob-type adjustment: The knob is usually located on the left side, side, or rear of the seat. When operating, lean slightly forward and rotate the knob clockwise or counterclockwise to change the backrest's tilt (the specific direction varies by model). After reaching the desired position, sit up straight to feel it, and make fine adjustments if necessary.
- Gas-lift adjustment: The adjustment lever is located beneath the chair. Pull up the lever while leaning back, and the backrest will tilt according to the force applied. Release it to secure it. You can also adjust the seat height by sitting on the chair and pulling up or pressing down the control lever, using your body weight to make adjustments. If there are two control levers beneath the seat, one usually controls the height, and the other controls the reclining angle.
- Other adjustment examples: Some chairs allow the backrest to spring back by pulling a handle and slightly rotating it. After laying the backrest flat, locate the lever under the right armrest and adjust the angle by rocking it back and forth.
Design Points
- Frame structure: It is divided into integrated and independent types. The integrated type is commonly found in leather chairs, where the seat and backrest are made of a single curved wooden board. This type is often used by corporate leaders but may cause discomfort due to a lack of elasticity. The independent backrest is connected to the chassis through a mechanism, making reclining convenient, and the reclining force of the backrest can be adjusted.
- Frame shape: Focus on the design of the shoulders and waist. The corners of the shoulders should be rounded to avoid inward curling. The 2D shape of the waist provides support to the lumbar spine through forward protrusion, while the 3D shape can fully conform to the human waist, dispersing pressure and providing better comfort.
- Lumbar support design: Prioritize lumbar supports with up-down and front-back adjustment functions to accommodate different body types and sitting postures. Avoid using lumbar supports or back frames that are split left and right, as long-term use may lead to left-right imbalance and lumbar spine deformation.
- Backrest material: Common materials include mesh, fabric, and leather. For personal use, it is recommended to choose mesh or genuine leather. Test the mesh by running your finger across it; if there is no burning sensation, the material is good. Fabric is prone to dirt and bacteria growth, and synthetic leather has poor breathability. For leather seats, prioritize lightweight models with separate back and seat sections, but they are more expensive.
