Office Chair Backrest Elasticity

Admin October 17, 2026

The adjustment methods for the elasticity of an office chair backrest vary depending on the type of chair, with common methods including knob adjustment, plus-minus sign adjustment, and linked chassis adjustment.

1. Knob Adjustment
Commonly found on traditional swivel chairs, the adjustment mechanism is usually located on the side of the chassis and appears as a cylindrical knob. Rotating it clockwise increases the backrest's rebound support force, making the resistance more noticeable when leaning back; rotating it counterclockwise decreases the elasticity, reducing the resistance when leaning back. This adjustment method is simple and intuitive, allowing users to quickly adjust according to their needs. However, it is important to note that the rotation range should not be too large to avoid affecting the user experience due to overly strong or weak elasticity.

2. Plus-Minus Sign Adjustment
More commonly seen on ergonomic chairs, such as the Daboli S20 model, the adjustment mechanism is located beneath the seat cushion and is operated using buttons or tabs marked with โ€œ+โ€ and โ€œ-โ€ signs. Moving in the โ€œ+โ€ direction increases the backrest's elasticity, suitable for users who are heavier or require stronger support; moving in the โ€œ-โ€ direction decreases the elasticity, suitable for users who are lighter or prefer a softer leaning-back feel. Such designs typically incorporate ergonomic principles to more precisely match the usage needs of different body types.

3. Linked Chassis Adjustment
Some high-end ergonomic chairs use a four-link eight-axis linked chassis, such as the Ergotune Optima Eagle X model. This type of chassis achieves dynamic adjustment of the reclining force through mechanical structures, allowing users to adjust the tightness using knobs or levers on the chassis. Its advantage lies in the more uniform distribution of elasticity during reclining, automatically adapting the support force according to changes in the body's center of gravity, providing a smoother sitting posture transition experience. However, the adjustment method is relatively complex and requires reference to the specific product manual for operation.

Adjustment Precautions

  • Ensure the chair is stationary before adjusting to avoid adjustment failure or damage to components due to movement.
  • Adjust the elasticity gradually, testing the reclining feel after each minor adjustment until a comfortable force is found.
  • If discomfort persists after adjustment, it may be due to a mismatch between the chair model and body type. It is recommended to contact the manufacturer for advice on suitable solutions.
