Office Chair Backrest Damping

Admin October 12, 2026

The office chair backrest damping is a core device that controls the reclining and rebound speed of the chair back through mechanical or magnetorheological systems, designed with both comfort and safety in mind.

Functional Principles

The damping system works in coordination with internal gas springs, springs, and dampers. When reclining, the damper (such as gear friction, hydraulic pressure, or gas compression) generates resistance, allowing the chair back to press down slowly and preventing sudden tipping; the spring stores energy and brings the chair back to its original position when released. The magnetorheological damping system adjusts the damping force by changing the excitation current, enabling dynamic adjustment and suitable for high-end models.

Structural Composition

A common combination is gas spring + spring + damping gear:

  • Gas spring: Supports the seat height and adjusts the lifting resistance through gas compression.
  • Spring/torsion spring: Connects the chair back to the chassis, stretching to store energy when reclining and releasing energy when returning to the upright position.
  • Damping gear set: High-viscosity silicone grease is applied at the gear meshing points, creating resistance through friction during rotation to prevent rapid flipping backward.

Adjustment Methods

  • Weight adaptation: Adjust the resistance level using the base knob or lever. Lighter individuals need to reduce the resistance, while heavier individuals need to increase it to avoid overly fast rebound or difficulty in reclining.
  • Angle adjustment: The reclining angle is usually between 120-135 degrees. High-end models support multi-stage locking, adjustable in increments via a paddle or knob. Some models are equipped with intelligent gravity sensing to automatically match the damping intensity.
  • Other adjustments: The back knob or lever can adjust the damping oil flow aperture or spring preload to change the reclining force. Gaming chairs support a 135ยฐ locking mode, where the gear set switches to a fixed catch for a lying office position.

Usage Precautions

  • Locking device: Confirm the status of the control lever to avoid accidentally triggering the locking switch and preventing reclining.
  • Movement amplitude: Start with a small 30ยฐ angle for initial use and gradually increase to the optimal inclination to avoid damaging the gas spring by exceeding 135ยฐ.
  • Weight adaptation: Individuals weighing over 90 kg should choose a steel chassis + four-stage gas spring to prevent component aging.
  • Daily maintenance: Check the base screws every 3 months and replace worn rollers promptly.

Materials and Lifespan

Low-priced chairs often use steel sheet springs + plastic gears, which are prone to deformation and breakage; mid-to-high-end products adopt automotive-grade nitrogen damping rods and metal-coated gears, with a lifespan of up to tens of thousands of cycles.
