Is the Backrest Cushion of an Office Chair Adjustable?

Admin October 08, 2026

The backrest cushion of an office chair is usually adjustable, with various adjustment methods including rebound force adjustment, reclining angle adjustment, and firmness adjustment.

Rebound Force Adjustment: Some office chairs are equipped with a rebound force adjustment knob at the bottom. By rotating this knob clockwise, the rebound force of the backrest can be increased, and vice versa. This adjustment method mainly targets the elastic feedback of the backrest. Users can adjust the support force of the backrest according to their own weight and sitting habits to ensure that the backrest provides appropriate rebound force when the sitting posture changes, avoiding discomfort caused by insufficient or excessive rebound force.

Reclining Angle Adjustment: Many office chairs are equipped with a reclining angle adjustment function, usually achieved through an adjustment handle on the right side of the seat. When using it, sit on the chair, pull the handle, lean back slightly with your back, and release the handle to fix the current angle. If you need to return to the original position, continue to pull the handle and lean back slightly with your back, and the backrest will spring back. The reclining angle range varies among different office chairs. Some computer chairs can have reclining angles of 90ยฐ, 100ยฐ, 125ยฐ, or even 155ยฐ. These angles are suitable for different scenarios. For example, 90ยฐ is suitable for focused work, helping to protect the lumbar and cervical spine; 100ยฐ is suitable for surfing the Internet or watching movies, providing a more relaxed sitting posture; 125ยฐ is suitable for taking a nap to relieve fatigue; and 155ยฐ is suitable for deep sleep to meet the needs of short breaks.

Firmness Adjustment: Some high-end executive chairs on the market are equipped with a firmness adjustment function to enhance user comfort and personalization. There are various ways to achieve this. One common method is to change the shape of the internal support components of the backrest through the cooperation of a gas rod and the mechanical structure inside the seat. For example, for a backrest with a spring structure, the compression degree of the spring can be adjusted by regulating the gas pressure to adjust the firmness of the backrest. Some chairs also use special sponge materials and switch the combination of different sponge layers through electric or manual control devices to achieve firmness adjustment. This function allows users to choose the most suitable backrest firmness according to their own needs, improving the comfort of long-term sitting.
