Office Chair Backrest Becomes Softer

Admin October 10, 2026

The softening of an office chair backrest can be restored or improved through targeted treatments, with the specific solution depending on the cause.

I. Analysis of Causes for Softening

  1. Material Aging: Over time, the molecular chains in memory foam (polyurethane foam) break down, leading to a loss of elasticity. This is particularly common in mid- to low-end products after 2-3 years of use. High temperatures, high humidity, or frequent use can accelerate aging.
  2. Material and Process Defects: To reduce costs, some products add excessive amounts of fillers such as talc and calcium carbonate (up to 40% or more) to the polyurethane, disrupting the polymer structure and resulting in low density and rapid decline in support.
  3. Design and Structural Issues: A backrest that is too rigid or has an improper angle can concentrate pressure on the lower back, leading to material fatigue and deformation over time due to prolonged stress. If the seat or backrest dimensions do not match the user's body type, inadequate support or excessive compression can also accelerate material degradation.
  4. Spring Failure: In chairs with spring structures, if the springs shift or lose elasticity, the backrest may become softer. It is necessary to check whether the spring fixing screws beneath the seat are loose.

II. Solutions to Restore Softness

  1. Filling Adjustment: Disassemble the backrest. If the internal filling is severely collapsed, replace it with rebound foam of moderate density or add a thin layer of slow-rebound foam on top of the original filling. Ensure the filling conforms to the curvature of the backrest to avoid local protrusions and ensure even support.
  2. Use of Supportive Soft Items: Choose a memory foam backrest cushion that matches the shape of the backrest, preferably with a non-slip bottom. This can enhance softness without adding extra burden to the backrest due to sliding.
  3. Adjusting Knobs: The hardness of some chair backrests can be adjusted via knobs. Turning the knob counterclockwise reduces hardness. If softening is desired, try this operation (confirm whether the chair has this function).
  4. Replacement of the Soft Padding Layer: If the soft padding layer of the backrest is aged or damaged, replacing it directly is a more thorough long-term solution.
  5. Spring Realignment: For chairs with springs, check the spring fixing screws beneath the seat. Tighten the screws to realign any shifted springs and restore elasticity.

III. Preventive Measures
Avoid prolonged exposure to high-temperature and high-humidity environments, and reduce frequent use. Choose products with reliable quality and reasonable filler ratios. Select chairs with dimensions that match your body type to ensure even distribution of pressure.
