Office Chair Backrest Adjustment

Admin October 13, 2026

There are various ways to adjust the backrest of an office chair, mainly including recline angle adjustment, backrest rebound force adjustment, and headrest adjustment. Here are the details:

Recline Angle Adjustment

  • Lever Adjustment System: Commonly found in mid-range and high-end office chairs. To adjust, first locate the adjustment lever beneath the seat, near the right or left side. If the chair has a locking function, gently pull or push the lever to unlock it. Then, shift your body weight backward while adjusting the lever to achieve a comfortable recline angle. Once at the desired angle, pull or push the lever again to lock the position.
  • Knob Adjustment System: Often used in ergonomic chairs. The knob is usually located near the center of the seat's underside, close to the support column. Turning it clockwise typically increases the backrest's recline resistance, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. You can adjust the backrest tilt according to your body weight and preferences. Some chairs may have a separate knob for recline angle adjustment; refer to the product manual for specific instructions.
  • Pneumatic Adjustment System: Some modern office chairs use a pneumatic system to assist with adjustments. The pneumatic lever is usually placed alongside the height adjustment lever, and you can adjust the recline by pushing it in different directions. Gently pull the lever to adjust the backrest to a comfortable angle.
  • Other Common Methods: Sit on the office chair and locate the adjustment handle. Pull the handle, lean back slightly with your back, and release the handle to fix the angle. To return to the original position, continue pulling the handle and apply a little force with your back, and the backrest will spring back. To lay the backrest flat, there is usually a lever under the right armrest. For front-to-back rocking, use the thick black cylinder in front of the chair's gas lift and rotate it left or right to adjust the rocking amplitude.

Backrest Rebound Force Adjustment

The rebound force of the backrest can be increased by turning the backrest rebound force adjustment knob clockwise. To decrease the rebound force, turn the knob counterclockwise.

Headrest Adjustment

Taking the Qingxian Dynamic Ergonomic Chair as an example, to adjust the height, simply lift the headrest. If you want to adjust the front-to-back position of the headrest, there are corresponding operation methods; refer to the product manual for specific instructions.
