Office Chair Backrest Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

The steps for adjusting the backrest of an office chair to a flat position are as follows:

Step 1: Check the Cable Control Switch and Small Gas Cylinder Before adjusting the backrest of the office chair, it is necessary to first confirm the status of the cable control switch and the small gas cylinder. The cable control switch is the core component for controlling the backrest angle, transmitting adjustment instructions through mechanical or pneumatic signals. The small gas cylinder serves as a support structure, achieving the locking and releasing of the backrest through changes in air pressure. If either of them malfunctions (such as cable control failure or gas cylinder leakage), it will result in the inability to adjust the backrest or it getting stuck.

Step 2: Cable Control Switch Adjustment Method

  1. Open the Cable Control Switch: Try to operate the cable control switch (usually located on the side or bottom of the seat) and observe whether it will automatically close. If the switch cannot remain in the open state, there may be the following issues:
    • Loose Cable Control: The nut inside the switch has become loose due to long-term use, resulting in poor contact. In this case, use a tool to adjust the nut and appropriately lengthen the cable control distance to restore tension.
    • Broken Cable Control: If the steel wire inside the cable control is broken, a brand-new cable control device needs to be replaced. When replacing, ensure that the new cable control matches the original chair model to avoid compatibility issues.
    • Disconnection Fault: The terminal of the cable control has detached from the connection with the gas cylinder. It needs to be re-attached and fixed. When operating, turn off the air pressure source to prevent accidental ejection.

Step 3: Small Gas Cylinder Inspection Method If the cable control switch functions normally, then the small gas cylinder needs to be inspected:

  1. Air Pressure Test: Gently press the thin end of the gas cylinder (usually the adjustment rod) with your hand and feel whether there is significant resistance. If the gas cylinder has no air pressure support, it will easily retract without a rebound feeling when pressed, indicating that the internal seal of the gas cylinder has failed or there is gas leakage.
  2. Replace the Gas Cylinder: After confirming that the gas cylinder is faulty, a new gas cylinder of the same specification needs to be purchased for replacement. When replacing, turn the seat upside down, use a tool to disassemble the old gas cylinder (pay attention to the position of the fixing screws), install the new gas cylinder, and then test whether the backrest adjustment is smooth.

Precautions:

  • Avoid violent operations during the adjustment process to prevent damage to the chair structure.
  • If the seat is equipped with a gas spring, release the internal air pressure before replacement to prevent high-pressure gas from spraying out and causing injury.
  • Regularly clean the connection between the cable control switch and the gas cylinder to prevent dust accumulation from affecting sensitivity.
