Office Chair Back Wobble

Admin October 19, 2026

The wobbling of an office chair back can be troubleshot and repaired through the following steps:

1. Check if the core screws are loose

There are usually 3-4 hexagon socket screws at the connection between the backrest and the base. Tighten them one by one with the corresponding tool, paying special attention to the concealed parts under the seat. If the screw holes are blackened or worn, it may be due to stripped threads. You can replace them with slightly thicker screws of the same specification or fill in wood shavings to increase friction. For office chairs priced over a thousand yuan (such as Herman Miller and Okamura), it is recommended to contact after-sales service to obtain original factory parts to avoid damage to the structure caused by non-standard screws.

2. Adjust the recline tension knob

Some chairs have a recline tension adjustment knob (located at the junction of the base and the backrest). Long-term non-adjustment may lead to a decrease in the spring's elastic force. Rotating the knob clockwise can increase the resistance. If adjustment is ineffective, the built-in spring or the entire adjustment mechanism needs to be replaced.

3. Check the gas lift and five-star base

If the backrest wobbles accompanied by the seat sinking, it indicates that the gas lift is aging or the connection between the five-star wheelbase and the base is worn. You can invert the chair and gently tap the gas lift with a rubber mallet to detach it from the base. When replacing, match the model (such as a diameter of 22mm or 25mm), and press down firmly after installation to test the stability. People weighing over 80 kilograms need to pay more attention to the wear and tear of the gas lift.

4. Targeted repair of loose parts

  • Loose adjustment rod screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover of the base counterclockwise. After exposing the metal fixing frame, use a wrench to symmetrically tighten 6-8 fixing screws (operate at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent misalignment).
  • Spring detachment: Use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, purchase a replacement part of the same specification online (with a diameter of 3-5mm and a price of 5-15 yuan). Measure the length of the original spring before purchasing.
  • Excessive clearance in the gas lift: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat and rotate the black plastic adjustment knob counterclockwise (test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ) to increase the support force.

5. Emergency reinforcement techniques

If the screws are stripped and there are no spare parts, you can temporarily wrap the screw rods with electrical tape, use cable ties to fix the connection between the backrest and the armrests, or cut bicycle inner tubes into strips and wrap them around the seams to increase friction. These methods are only for short-term emergency use. For long-term use, professional repair is still required.

Daily maintenance advice: Check the tightness of the screws every six months and regularly spray rust-removing lubricant on the adjustment mechanisms. When purchasing, prioritize models with a three-position backrest locking function. Steel-frame backrests (such as those from Sihoo and Okamura) are more than 30% more durable than plastic frames.
