Office Chair Back Softness

Admin October 22, 2026

Office chair back softness can be addressed by checking screws, adjusting recline resistance, replacing damaged parts, or using emergency reinforcement methods. Details are as follows:

1. Check and tighten screws and connectors Loose screws at the connection between the chair back and the base are a common cause. Locate the screws under the seat or at the folding part of the backrest and tighten them clockwise using a Phillips screwdriver or an Allen wrench. If the screw hole is stripped, you can temporarily fix it by filling it with a toothpick + wood glue or replace it with a larger-diameter screw. For some chairs, there are plastic covers at the base connection. Rotate these covers counterclockwise to expose the metal frame and then tighten the 6-8 fixing screws one by one with a wrench (it is recommended to operate symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to avoid uneven force distribution).

2. Adjust recline resistance Most office chairs have a circular knob or a toggle at the bottom to control the tightness of the backrest. Rotate the knob counterclockwise or push the toggle to the maximum resistance position. Sit on the chair and lean back to test the tightness, and adjust repeatedly until it is comfortable. If the effect is not satisfactory, you can open the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, find the adjustment knob of the gas lift (usually a black plastic part), and rotate it counterclockwise to increase the support force. Test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ during adjustment.

3. Replace damaged parts

  • Gas lift: If there is abnormal noise during lifting, replace the gas spring that meets TUV or SGS certification.
  • Plastic clips: If the clips on the backrest are broken, you can temporarily fix them with AB glue, but it is recommended to purchase original factory parts for replacement.
  • Springs: If the spring retention fails, use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, measure its original length and then purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (the price is about 5-15 yuan).

4. Emergency reinforcement techniques If you don't have professional tools, you can cut a bicycle inner tube into 3cm-wide tape and wrap it around the joint between the backrest and the base to increase friction. Or use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift to limit the swing amplitude. Such operations can maintain stability for 3-7 days, and a thorough repair should be carried out as soon as possible.

Other precautions If the backrest is loose and cannot be fixed, check whether the mechanical structure and the adjustment lever are faulty, damaged, or deformed. Such problems usually require replacing parts or the entire chair. Long-term use may cause wear and tear, so regular maintenance is required (such as applying lubricant and cleaning impurities). If the chair is of poor quality, it is recommended to replace it with a better one.
