Office Chair Back Pillar

Admin October 22, 2026

There are different viewpoints on the feng shui impact of an office chair back pillar, and a comprehensive assessment needs to be made by considering the room's orientation and layout; it cannot be simply judged as absolutely auspicious or unfavorable.

From the perspective of the "mountain support" concept in feng shui theory, if there is a pillar behind an office chair and the seat's position itself is an auspicious spot (such as the wealth or official positions determined by the Eight Mansions School or Flying Star Feng Shui), the pillar can be regarded as "mountain support". Mountain support symbolizes stability and support in feng shui, enhancing the magnetic field strength and helping to improve career luck and the chance of meeting influential people. For example, in traditional feng shui layouts, having a solid wall or pillar behind an office desk is believed to provide assistance in work and reduce obstacles.

However, another viewpoint emphasizes "the pillar behind the seat suppressing luck and cutting off fortune." If the pillar is directly behind the seat and overly prominent, it may create a sense of "backstabbing" or "oppression," blocking the qi flow and affecting luck. According to this view, the shape, thickness, and distance of the pillar from the seat all influence the outcome: if the pillar is slender and close to the seat, it may intensify the sense of oppression; if the pillar is sturdy but at an appropriate distance, it may transform into stable support. In addition, if the seat's position itself is an inauspicious spot (such as the Five Yellow or Two Black positions), the presence of the pillar may further amplify negative energy, leading to health or career problems.

The actual impact needs to be comprehensively judged by considering the room's orientation and layout. For example, if the room has good overall lighting and smooth air circulation, the negative impact of the pillar may be weakened; if the room is dim and narrow, the pillar may exacerbate the blocked qi flow. Moreover, the relative position of the office chair and the pillar is also crucial: if the pillar is located to the side or in front of the seat, it is generally not regarded as "mountain support" but may instead form "road rush" or "sharp-corner็…ž (sharp-corner็…ž is a term in feng shui referring to the negative energy caused by sharp corners)", which need to be resolved with screens or green plants.

It is recommended to further analyze by drawing a sketch and marking the directions. You can mark the positions of the room's door, windows, pillars, and office chair, determine the orientation using a feng shui compass (such as the East Four Life or West Four Life), and then judge the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness according to the specific annual flying stars. If you are unable to make the judgment yourself, you can consult a professional feng shui master for an on-site survey to formulate a more precise adjustment plan.
