Back Pain from Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

Improper use of office chairs can indeed lead to back pain, which can be effectively alleviated by adjusting the chair, sitting posture, and taking regular breaks. Here are the specific methods:

1. Chair Selection and Adjustment

  • Choose a chair with a backrest: Prioritize office chairs with lumbar support. The lumbar support should be able to press against the lower back (the 3rd to 5th lumbar vertebrae) to prevent the waist from hanging in the air. If the chair has no lumbar support, you can place a soft pillow or a rolled-up towel at the waist, with a thickness of about 5 - 8 centimeters, to support the natural curvature of the lumbar spine.
  • Adjust the chair height: Ensure that both feet are flat on the ground and the knees are bent at a 90-degree angle with the hip joints. If the chair is too high and causes the feet to hang in the air, use a footrest. If it is too low, adjust the seat height or the desk height (if adjustable). At the same time, the elbows should hang naturally and be at a 90-degree angle with the desk to avoid shrugging or having the arms hang in the air.

2. Sitting Posture Optimization

  • Maintain a neutral spine position: Avoid slouching, leaning forward, or slumping for long periods. Keep your back pressed against the chair back, shoulders relaxed, head upright, and eyes level with the center of the computer screen (or slightly lower).
  • Use an ergonomic lumbar support: If the lumbar support of the chair is insufficient, you can equip an additional ergonomic lumbar support. Its curvature should fit the curvature of the lumbar spine to distribute the pressure on the waist.

3. Regular Movement and Rest

  • Adjust your sitting posture every 30 minutes: Even if you maintain a correct sitting posture, prolonged stillness can cause muscle fatigue. It is recommended to slightly adjust your sitting posture (such as straightening your back and turning your waist left and right) or do some simple stretches (such as stretching your arms backward and looking up at the ceiling) every 30 minutes.
  • Get up and move for 3 - 5 minutes every hour: Sitting continuously for more than 1 hour can cause poor blood circulation in the waist and increase the pressure on the lumbar intervertebral discs. It is advisable to get up, walk around, do chest expansion exercises, or lateral bends of the waist every hour to promote blood circulation and relieve muscle tension.

4. Other Supportive Measures

  • Avoid prolonged sitting: Try to reduce continuous office work time. You can set an alarm to remind yourself to move.
  • Strengthen the core muscle group: Usually, enhance the strength of the waist and abdominal muscles through exercises such as planks and bridge exercises to improve the stability of the lumbar spine.

By making the above adjustments, you can significantly improve the problem of back pain caused by improper use of office chairs. If the pain persists or worsens, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly to rule out lumbar spine diseases.
